Why is Shazam Called Shazam?

 BY  1 COMMENT

It’s difficult to imagine now, but in the late 90s, getting information via mobile phones required a little more patience. There were no app stores, no Siris, no, ‘Okay, Google’s. Back then, (at the risk of sounding like my grandfather) you had to text mobile shortcodes to make online inquiries. 411, for example, is a directory shortcode, and in the early stages of Google mobile, you could text GOOGL at 46645 to settle an escalating friendly debate.

In 1999 (which represents 666 turned upside down), 2580 was just another one of these shortcodes, but it had a more specific mission: make magic. The digits, which become less random after realizing they form a vertical line on the keypad, were the literal keys to the Shazam music empire.

Founded in London, anyone on a UK mobile network could text 2580 from their phone and record 30 seconds of audio before the receiver automatically hung up. Then, the mobile user would receive a text with a song title and artist name, and eventually a hyperlink to download said track – permitted it was already in the Shazam database.

To its founders, Chris Barton, Philip Inghelbrecht, Avery Wang and Dhiraj Mukherjee, this process was magical. Despite 2580’s presence at the forefront, the team affectionately referred to it as Shazam from the very beginning; because while the word sparks thoughts of Captain Marvel or Shaquile O’Neal(Kazaam) for some, for them it meant wizardry.  (The Word Shazam meant WIZARDRY)

Why is it called Shazam?

At the Pioneer’s Festival in2013, Barton told the audience, “Shazamis actually in the dictionary. The word is an exclamation, and it means, ‘when you’re conjuring magical things. So for example, if I were to teleport myself from San Francisco here to Vienna right now and I just appeared on stage, I might say, “Shazam! Here I am in Vienna!” We really thought that was a great word for something where you kind of magically identified music. And interestingly, to this day, all these years later, that concept of magical experience is a core part of the product strategy of Shazam. The company wants to build these magical experiences into mobile devices for users.”

Anyone who has used Shazam would probably agree with this, because while the technology has come a long way since shortcodes, the premise is the same. Smartphone or Mac PC users can download the app, open it to record TV or audio tracks and – SHAZAM! a title appears instantaneously. Behind the scenes, however, the app creates an acoustic fingerprint based on a time-frequency graph, or spectrogram from 10 seconds of a user tag and compares it against a database of more than 15 billion tracks for a match.
However magical it may seem, Shazam actually uses advanced technology to identify audio. In an interview, Chris Barton told Mixergy, “We definitely had a number of challenges in getting Shazam off the ground. The first one was making our algorithm actually work at production grade so that [it worked] in noisy environments and [to] make sure it scaled across large number of users and large amounts of music. We also had to implement, build, essentially, our own mini-Google, our own cluster-search engine, our Beowulf cluster of parallel processing PCs, stacks of PCs that, within the RAM, housed all the fingerprints of the music.”

They eventually got the help they needed from a Stanford Electrical Engineering Professor named Julius Smith, who was known for inventing the algorithms behind Yamaha synthesizers. Smith quickly became an advisor for Shazam and introduced Avery Wang, a PhD student and the only original member of the company to remain on board as the Chief Scientist.

Once they had the algorithm, all they needed was the app store. After listing as one of the first mobile applications in the Apple App Store, Shazam ultimately became one of the top ten apps in the world by 2013. Although its first users had to pay text fees, the app today can make miracles through a freemium model. The basic version is free to download, and its big brother Shazam Encore can be purchased to enable US TV viewers to get more information about a show, its music and its cast. Now you can Tap to see what song is playing and watch the lyrics unfold, right on your wrist. Just like, well… magic.

______________ is the most Shazam’d song of all times. Take a guess, comment below! Thanks for visiting.

Shazam 2 Official Title Reveal Brings Gods to the DCEU!!

2019’s Shazam was a blast. It signaled DCEU’s change of pace in direction for a newer and younger audience. Carrying the tradition forward, Shazam 2 will also feature the same cast and a brand new story line. It will have more magic, more mayhem, more childlike humor, and more of Captain Sparklefingers. DC FanDome had a Shazam! Panel and they made sure the audiences worldwide remembered them. While having nothing much to show to the viewers, one substantial development for the Shazam Sequel is that the movie has an official title. It was revealed during a panel at the DC FanDome event.spacer

shazam 2 | DC Shazam! Fury of the Gods (2022) From New Line Cinema comes Shazam! Fury of the Gods, which continues the story of teenage Billy Batson who, upon reciting the magic word SHAZAM!,” is transformed (shapeshifted/transmuted/transmogrified) into his adult Super Hero alter ego, Shazam. Read more A Welcome Return: Rounding Up This Year’s Big Comic-Con Moments.
The meta-casting of Sinbad as one of the cast members for Shazam! Fury of the Gods may have been too cryptic for our tastes. There is more to Shazam 2’s story than what meets the eye.  Maybe the title means that Shazam is fighting the Gods of the Old order that have come to Earth to do their bidding. Shazam, who is him-self powered by the gifts of six Gods of Older Pantheons – Solomon, Hercules, Mercury, Zeus, Atlas, and Achilles, will have a strong connection to the Fury of the Gods title.
For a committed comic book aficionado, it does not take much time or effort to recognize that this is a reference to the character of Black Adam. It also serves as a discreet little hint at his eventual debut in the DC Extended Universe, the role that he will likely play in future movies and his relationship with Shazam. At this point, it probably goes without saying that when Levi and Johnson’s characters finally do meet on the big screen, it is not going to be pretty and the evidence lies all throughout their history in the comics.
An alter ego (pronounced awl -ter ee -goh) is a secondary self. The fascination behind an alter ego is in its secrecy—it’s almost always a second identity or life that is being hidden from a person or character’s friends, family, and others around them. Of Latin origin and stemming from the Greek állos egṓ, the term is believed to have …
There is MUCH chatter these days about “alter egos“–particularly among the rich and celebrated who are 1-youthful; and, 2- selling the story of “alter ego.”

alter ego

a second self or different version of oneself: such as
a:  a trusted friend
b:  the opposite side of a personality

“A second self or a different version of oneself.”

Not sure what that means?

What a mystery!

Perhaps one can shed some light on the true nature of these alter egos by listening to what the rich and celebrated (mostly those who labor in TV, movies and pop music) have to say about their alter egos.

What is unexplained is why, when an alter ego is “let out” (the most common way the rich and celebrated describe one of these manifestations), the person taken over by their “alter ego” often LOOKS and SOUNDS so completely different from the host body’s normal appearance.

Actress Jennifer Lawrence even provides pictures to prove this point in the video interview.

12 Celebs & Their AMAZING Alter Egos

The most well-known of the “alter egos” may be singer Beyoncé Knowles-Carter‘s Sasha Fierce.

The biggest physical change is the one undergone when singer Lady Gagaunleashes her “Jose Calderon” alter ego. Readers can make the judgment for themselves from the photos and video at the above link.

Question: Why is it that these “alter egos” have their own separate names and personalities?

Nicki Minaj’s Alter Egos (OLD & NEW)

Nicki Minaj has stated that she has 14–some sources say “15“–different persons inside her–all with different names.

A man’s many “alter egos” had been noted centuries before.

“And they arrived at the country of the Gadarenes, which is over against Galilee. And when he went forth to land, there met him out of the city a certain man, which had devils long time, and ware no clothes, neither abode in any house, but in the tombs. When he saw Jesus, he cried out, and fell down before him, and with a loud voice said, What have I to do with thee, Jesus, thou Son of God most high? I beseech thee, torment me not. (For he had commanded the unclean spirit to come out of the man. For oftentimes it had caught him: and he was kept bound with chains and in fetters; and he brake the bands, and was driven of the devil into the wilderness.) And Jesus asked him, saying, What is thy name? And he said, Legion: because many devils were entered into him.”
–Luke 8:26-30

“And he asked him, What is thy name? And he answered, saying, My name is Legion: for we are many.”
–Mark 5:9

Famous comedians, such as Robin Williams, openly talked of his possession on stage.

Robin Williams: ‘It’s not a muse that drives you on…it is a demon!’

Alter egos?

It has a nice ring to it.

Probably so much better to say in mixed company than “possessed.”

There is more–MUCH more–to be said on the subject of the “alter egos” of the rich and celebrated.

A Brief History Of Black Adam Vs. Shazam

July 11th, 2022A Brief History Of Black Adam Vs. Shazam

BLACK ADAM

One of the most highly anticipated upcoming movies of 2022 — especially of the superhero variety — is BLACK ADAM, in which the titular DC Comics anti-hero will be brought to life on the big screen by superstar and executive producer Dwayne Johnson. The film’s long, long-awaited release in theatres — currently set for Friday, October 21 — is now closer than ever, but did you know that the character’s debut in a live-action, feature-length film almost occurred in an earlier DC Extended Universe installment? Before it was decided that he would lead his own movie, Black Adam was going to play a major role in 2019’s SHAZAM!

People less versed in superhero lore may be wondering what Black Adam and Billy Batson have in common — outside of the lightning bolt on each of their costumes and the fact that they are both DC characters. Well, they just happen to have one of the most notorious rivalries in the comic book publisher’s history, which we will shed some light on in the following quick and convenient guide. However, let’s start with Black Adam’s first known connection to the DCEU.

Black Adam Was Subtly Referenced In Shazam!

We saw the live-action, feature-length debut of Billy Bat-son (as in son of a bat/vampire) — played by Asher Angel — and his super-powered and super-sized alter-ego — played by Zachary Levi — in director David F. Sandberg’s fun and thrilling 2019 hit, SHAZAM! Right before the orphaned teenager is endowed with an impressive arsenal of superhuman abilities, the wizard also named Shazam — played by Djimon Honsou — admits to Billy that the last time these powers were given to someone, he “chose recklessly” as the selected champion was corrupted by the Seven Deadly Sins and nearly destroyed the world,

BATS
Patti Wigington notes that the Mayans had a god named Camazotz, who had a bat head and wings, and the body of a man (2019). Camazotz lived in a cave known as the house of bats (Strom 2019). You’ll find plenty of websites that refer to him as ‘the bat man’. Sometimes he’s referred to as the god of death. He attacked victims before decapitating them, including the Mayan hero Hunahpu. In medieval Europe, many thought bats worked as witches’ familiars. Some in Scotland and northern England even thought bats carried messages between the devil and witches (Wigington 2019).Others in Austria’s Tyrol region believed a bat’s left eye made a man invisible when he wore it, whereas binding a bat’s heart to your arm with red thread made you lucky at cards in Germany.Bats have been present in folklore and myth for quite some time. As messengers for the forces of darkness, they become evil omens. Often associated with vampires who are rumored shape shift from human to bat form to human with bat wings. There are only three species of vampire bat, which only live in Central and South America. Even then, many of them are no bigger than 9 cm long. They’d hardly be able to drain enough blood to kill a person.
Asher is the name of one of the 12 Tribes of Israel

And this is the blessing, wherewith Moses the man of God blessed the children of Israel before his death.  And of Asher he said, Let Asher be blessed with children; let him be acceptable to his brethren, and let him dip his foot in oil.  Thy shoes shall be iron and brass; and as thy days, so shall thy strength be.  Deuteronomy 33

And Jacob called unto his sons, and said, Gather yourselves together, that I may tell you that which shall befall you in the last days.

Out of Asher his bread shall be fat, and he shall yield royal dainties.   Genesis 49

Likewise, Levi is one of the Tribes of Israel and these are the blessings on the tribe of Levi

Jacob Blesses Simeon and Levi.

“Simeon and Levi are brothers; weapons of violence are their swords.  Let my soul come not into their council; O my glory, be not joined to their company. For in their anger they killed men, and in their willfulness they hamstrung oxen. Cursed be their anger, for it is fierce, and their wrath, for it is cruel! I will divide them in Jacob and scatter them in Israel. (Genesis 49:5–7 (ESV)

“As expected, Jacob’s words would come true in the history of the nation of Israel. Simeon is the only tribe Moses does not bless in Deuteronomy 33, and he is given only a select number of cities in Judah’s territory (Josh. 19:1–9). The tribe of Judah eventually absorbs the Simeonites, and they disappear from history.  Levi is also scattered throughout Israel, but his tribe fares better in the history of redemption. Moses, a son of Levi (Ex. 2:1–10), later mediates the old covenant. Moreover, God would choose the Levites to be His priests (Num. 3:5–13), restoring honor to these displaced sons of Jacob.

John Calvin writes that God’s “incredible goodness unexpectedly shone forth, when that which was the punishment of Levi became changed into the reward of the priesthood.”   Source

And of Levi he said, Let thy Thummim and thy Urim be with thy holy one, whom thou didst prove at Massah, and with whom thou didst strive at the waters of Meribah;

Who said unto his father and to his mother, I have not seen him; neither did he acknowledge his brethren, nor knew his own children: for they have observed thy word, and kept thy covenant.

They shall teach Jacob thy judgments, and Israel thy law: they shall put incense before thee, and whole burnt sacrifice upon thine altar.

Bless, LORD, his substance, and accept the work of his hands: smite through the loins of them that rise against him, and of them that hate him, that they rise not again.   Deuteronomy 33

Billy Batson Became The Wizard Shazam’s Champion After Black Adam

Despite having undergone many, many retooled versions of his origin story – such as how he was originally written as an Egyptian and later as a native of the fictional nation of Kahndaq — the one most essential element of Black Adam’s arc that remains constant is that he was once a powerless slave named Teth-Adam. That was, until the wizard Shazam chose him to be a champion of the gods and endowed him with the wisdom of Soloman, the strength of Hercules, the stamina of Atlas, the power of Zeus, the courage of Achilles and the speed of Mercury.

noun \ ˈtāt , ˈtāth, ˈtās \ Definition of teth : the 9th letter of the Hebrew alphabet — see Alphabet Table First Known Use of teth circa 1823, in the meaning defined above History and Etymology for teth Hebrew ṭēth Learn

What does “teth” mean in Psalms 119? – Quora
Tethis the ninth letter of that Hebrew alphabet. In “Biblical numerics” the number 9 is associated with “testing or trials.” Moody’s Commentary associates this “tech” with the phrase “God’s Word is Good.” Moody points to the concept that even God’s Judgements are good. The purpose is to educate, elevate and protect.

Teth – Wikipedia
Teth, also written as Ṭēth or Tet, is a letter of the Semitic abjads, including Phoenician Ṭēt , Hebrew Tēt ט ‎, Aramaic Ṭēth , Syriac Ṭēṯ ܛ, and Arabic Ṭāʾ ط. It is the 16th letter of the modern Arabic alphabet. The Persian ṭa is pronounced as a hard “t” sound and is the 19th letter in the modern Persian alphabet.

The Letter Tet (ט) – Hebrew Today
As its name indicates, Tet has the sound of a “t.” Some believe that the meaning of the letter Tet is related to a Phoenician letter by the same name whose meaning was “wheel.” Nonetheless, in the Hebrew language, the letter itself, as well as its meaning is generally accepted to be connected to the Hebrew word “tov”  (טוב), meaning  “good.”

Teth: טית: The origin of the teth is a bit of a mystery. Klein derives from טות (twh), spin, and renders teth to knot, knot together, to twist into each other, to interweave. The letter teth indeed looks like a little vortex or spiral. 9: י: Yod: יד: One of two regular words for hand (for the other see the 11th letter).
The Mystery of Tet Tet is a paradoxical letter in that it reveals both good (tov) and evil. The form of the letter is “inverted,” suggesting hidden goodness, like that of a woman who is pregnant with child. However, sometimes the potential for goodness (tahorah) is perverted, and impurity or filth (tumah) results.

DC’s newest superhero movie, Black Adam, hits U.S. theaters today, to the delight of excited fans who’ve been patiently waiting for it. Starring Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, the film follows the titular character, Adam, who was granted the power of Shazam in order to fight against oppression in the fictional nation of Kahndaq, 5000 years ago. Now, the character re-emerges as Black Adam to deal some damage to new enemies.

‘Black Adam’ gallery  1 of 11

The origin of Teth-Adam and its meaning

Before the character became known as Black Adam, his original alias was Teth-Adam, which translates to “Mighty Adam”. While the power of Shazam was an incredible asset to Adam, before long his newfound abilities became too much for him, and Adam was corrupted by it. The then-superhero became a brutal fighter, with no qualms about killing whoever stands in his way.

This occurrence led the ancient wizard who empowered him, Shazam, to attribute a new name to the character. From then on, he became known as Khem-Adam, which translates to Black Adam. The new alias is symbolic of the protagonist’s now dark soul. After renaming Adam, the wizard banished him from the planet for thousands of years.

article continues:

However, Teth-Adam did not use his powers for the good of the people as he was instructed to, but for his own personal gain — making himself into the tyrannical ruler of his country — and to carry out his problematic and reckless brand of justice regardless of the consequences. Shazam then chose to strip Black Adam of his powers, leading him to become imprisoned for centuries. By the time he was released, Shazam had already chosen someone else to be his new champion — the young, pure-of-heart Billy Batson.

Now, as the case tends to be with any comic book character whose story arc has been reimagined as many times as Black Adam, the exact explanation of how he became acquainted with Batson can vary. However, no matter what interpretation you come across, there is one thing that is for sure — Black Adam is not happy about how things have gone and he wants to punish the champion they call Shazam for taking his place. To make matters worse, upon his release from prison, he would become endowed with a new set of powers courtesy of a different group of six Egyptian deities that would help level the playing field during their many battles over the years.

Black Adam Became Shazam’s Ongoing Arch Nemesis

Any chance he got, Black Adam would always seek out a new way to finally take down his successor, Shazam, either by blunt force or some clever manipulation. For instance, there was one occasion — as depicted in “All-New Collector’s Edition #C-58” from May 1978 — when the villain helped Kal-El’s sand-based (all technoglogy is sand based/built on shifting sand)  doppelganger, Quarmer, and the evil Martian sorcerer Karmang incite a conflict between Shazam and Superman. On a few occasions, Black Adam has also teamed up with Dr. Thaddeus Sivana — Mark Strong’s character in SHAZAM! — against Billy Batson, such as in 1977’s “Shazam #28,” which sees the foes transported to the Colonial Era, where they bump into Paul Revere.

Not all of Shazam’s conflicts with Black Adam have been particularly personal, however. The September 1980 issue of World’s Finest sees Black Adam recruited to a new version of the Monster’s Society of Evil, as formed by the conniving caterpillar, Mister Mind, whose first target happens to be Billy Batson. There was also a major event in DC’s New 52 continuity that sees Black Adam start World War III, which Shazam ends with help from Zatanna by changing their shared magic word from “Shazam” to “Chocolate Ice Cream,” making Black Adam unable to unleash his powers again after changing back to his human form.

Zatanna is a stage magician with actual mystic powers much like her father, Zatara, granting her magical powers notably controlled by invoking commands speaking incantations backwards. Shazam And Black Adam Once Had To Team Up

While their relationship has always been — and will most likely remain — relatively tense, Shazam has been known to play nice with his arch enemy. This more peaceful arrangement became especially prevalent after Black Adam was rebranded in the comics as less of a villain and more of an anti-hero, and even became a member of the Justice Society of America — a superhero collective that actually predates the Justice League and is also making its feature film debut in BLACK ADAM.

There was even a time when Shazam and Black Adam joined forces — an unlikely pairing that occured as recently as 2020 in “Shazam #14.” Their common enemy was an evil, alternate-reality version of Clark Kent known as Superboy-Prime, who managed to defeat the rest of the Shazam family, leaving Billy Batson to accept the help of Black Adam to take down the Kryptonian. At least the villain can be credited with helping these powerful rivals call a truce for once.

Dwayne Johnson has actually teased the idea of his Black Adam appearing alongside Superman on screen, but he never specified if it would be Henry Cavill in the red and blues. Perhaps it could be a rogue, interdimensional version of the Kryptonian who is not necessarily Clark Kent’s alter ego which forces the anti-hero to team-up with Zachary Levi’s Shazam. Eventually, all rivalries in superhero fiction (either in comics or on the big screen) come to some sort of roadblock and we would not be surprised if that was what it took for these characters to reach that point in the DCEU. For now, we are excited to see how their cinematic rivalry starts, which just may be when BLACK ADAM finally arrives in AMC Theatres.

The name Zamzummim:
Summary:

Meaning
Schemers, The Devised Against
Etymology
From the verb זמם (zamam), to scheme.

The name Zamzummim in the Bible

The Zamzummim were a race of giants, who are mentioned only once in the Bible, namely in Deuteronomy 2:20, where we learn that the Ammonites used to call them that, but to the Hebrews these guys were known as the Rephaim. These Zamzummim were a people as great, numerous and tall as the Anakim, but YHWH destroyed them so that the Ammonites could move into their territory. The Ammonites, after all, were descendants of Lot, who was the nephew of Abraham and that obviously counted for much in the Biblical arena.

Why the Ammonites insisted on calling these extinct Rephaim Zamzummim isn’t explained. What also isn’t explained is why the NAS calls them Zamzummin (with an “n” at the end), or why the KJV called them Zamzummims (which redundantly combines the Hebrew masculine plural “-im” with the English plural “-s”). The NIV, slick as always, calls them Zamzummites, but that particular transliteration is common for ethnonyms that are adjectives and therefore end with a י (yod), like ישראלי, or yisraeli, which we call Israelites. In Hebrew these people were called זמזמים, Zamzummim, which is a common plural; one of them would be called a זמזם, Zamzum.

Etymology of the name Zamzummim

The name Zamzummim comes from a noun which dictionaries don’t normally list because it doesn’t occur in the Bible. Scholars suspect that it existed in Hebrew because it does in Arabic, and in Arabic it denotes the talking of nonsense. The verb from which this Arabic noun derives means to speak or talk, and the noun is formed by repeating the verb; as such it’s probably comparable to our term “bla-bla”.

However, the Hebrew version of this Arabic verb, זמם (zamam), doesn’t mean to speak or talk, but to plan or scheme, and that usual with detrimental effect:

Remember the Stag Dance from India?  SHAZAM? You might want to go back up to the place on this post and reread it.

Once again, the objective in showing you all this stuff is to help you to realize that we do not KNOW what these things: words, characters, tunes, etc. mean in the realm of the spirit.  THEREFORE, we should cautious about what we let come of our mouths, or enter our minds.  HEARING is more powerful than we realize.  Be careful little ears what you hear.  Why?  Because “FAITH COMES BY HEARING” that is what GOD told us.  Well, if FAITH in GOD comes by hearing the Words of the Lord, what do you think comes by hearing the words/music of the Devil/Enemy/Adversary??
