THE VENUE
Moscone Convention Center
Sixteen massive concrete arches span 275 feet to form this facility, the largest column-free exhibit hall in the world. At the time of construction, it was also the largest poured-in-place concrete building structure ever built in California. Measuring approximately 780 feet by 350 feet, including usable space beyond the base of the arches, the hall contains 275,000 square feet. With a ceiling height of 37 feet, the 6.3-acre hall features a main ballroom seating 4,000 people and 31 other rooms holding from 50 to 600, and a kitchen that can serve 6,000. Except for its lobby, which is the size of a football field, the convention center was constructed underground with its roof capable of supporting several low-rise buildings.

Moscone Center Expansion
Status: Completed, 2019
The Moscone Center Expansion, a project designed for San Francisco Travel and the City & County of San Francisco through a joint effort by Skidmore, Owings, and Merrill (SOM) with Mark Cavagnero Associates (MCA), offers both an expansive, light-filled container for the bustling activities of the convention center and a jewel box moment for the city’s public.
The project spans two sweeping blocks on either side of Howard Street, neighbored on one end by the vibrant Yerba Buena Gardens and by the playful Children’s Garden on the other. SFMoMa is a block away, with the Museum of the African Diaspora and the Contemporary Jewish Museum only a few steps further. The Moscone Center is seated firmly in the city’s cultural hub, and the architects centered their efforts on expanding upon that relationship, looking both back to historical studies of the neighborhood and closely at current developments in the surrounding area. The expansion addresses the original 1970s structure, which was built in response to a very different San Francisco from the one experienced today. The original building was closed off from the neighborhood, a “black box” that felt intrusive in what is, today, the rich and vibrant neighborhood of SoMa, home to both the cultural institutions aforementioned and many of the city’s striking new business developments, including the new Salesforce Tower. To do this, the team essentially turned the convention model inside-out: the new structure is transparent and inviting, with wide spans of windows lining a periphery built in close proximity to the busy sidewalk, activating a reciprocal relationship between the users of the space and the city’s public.
Special care was taken with the elevation facing the playground, where a wide terrace relieves the massing in the South wing and preserves for the playground a view of the city skyline in the background. Lightly planted, the terrace is kept flexible to suit the diverse programs it will hold, with landscaping prioritized around the periphery so the soft edge of greenery can further break up the mass of the architecture, tying it visually into the gardens below.
Making use of existing connections to the community, a bridge that originally connected Yerba Buena Gardens and the Children’s Garden was incorporated into the designed, transformed into a sculptural, open-air walkway woven through by landscaping that continues the language of the two parks it links. The bridge passes over Howard Street, and is now matched by another: a bridge enclosed in glass, made to appear nearly weightless with a thin floor suspended from a structural roof by steel rods.
The new internal bridge provides a formal echo to the open-air public corridor, the two framing at street level what the architects consider the project’s “living room:” the center of Howard Street, where one side of Moscone faces the other. Across one bridge, families and tourists stroll along the elevated park walkway. On the other, convention-goers follow the major thoroughfare for circulation between the two buildings, alleviated the public strain that comes with the volume of traffic during a major event.
This careful negotiation of public and private passages weaves through – quite literally – the expansive project, which dominates two full city blocks. The architects looked to old historic maps, which show the giant superblocks mediated by a rich network of smaller alleys. The team leveraged these smaller side streets, connecting them with those utilized by SFMoMA and the new Transbay Terminal. Making pedestrian thoroughfares more intuitive, they carve into the building on the ground floor, the levels above passing overhead with windowed bridges, knitting together the public and private corridors so they feel like two parts of the same integrated ecosystem.
Underground, the vast exposition spaces of Moscone connect through an expanded central hall which now spans one-third of the length of Howard Street, providing the opportunity for wide, sweeping movement through the hall while preserving distinct zones that keep the space feeling intimate.
Throughout the project, care was taken to ensure the space needed to appreciate the Moscone Center’s many public artworks, including pieces by Gustavo Rivera, Keith Haring, and Hung Liu. The massive companies you’ve never heard of that keep the internet running
The world is saturated by services and products provided by companies that have a ’secret grip’ on the way we live
The world is saturated by services and products provided by companies that have a “secret grip” on the way we live. In 1951, the French-born American industrial designer Raymond Loewy described a typical day “of the average guy” from the moment he wakes up until he goes to bed. The point being that the average guy’s life was saturated with designed products.
In 2024, the average person may be woken by an alarm on a smartphone, and benefit from hot water that is controlled by smart heating controls – also linked to a smartphone and the internet. There might be a delivery tracked via the internet and a ring on a doorbell also linked to the internet. Online banking links them to an array of financial services.
Our lives are increasingly dependent on being able to access what I have termed the “cyber-energy-production plexus”. This “plexus” is basically an interwoven combination of elements that form a structure or a system. Regulating our modern lives, it needs to be “on” every second of the day.
It has formed around the multiple connections between telecommunications, energy, and manufacturing and service systems. It exposes everyone to unknown risks, including the sudden failure of the plexus and all the services coupled to it.
The CrowdStrike outage in 2024 caused global systems to fall ‘like a house of cards’ (PA)
On July 19 2024, part of this plexus failed when the faulty CrowdStrike software update caused an outage, and the outcome was a minor digital pandemic across the world as the computer systems of whole industries came to a halt.
Consumers and producers began to appreciate how dependent they had become on interlinked technologies. The next digital pandemic could bring down the complete plexus for a few hours or even days.
Hidden grip
Perhaps unsurprisingly, the internet is at the centre of this plexus. There are more than 1,000 companies like CrowdStrike, whose actions can negatively impact its functioning.
This, of course, includes the obvious names – Microsoft, Alphabet (Google, Google Cloud), Amazon, and Meta (Facebook). There are also less well-known companies like Cloudflare, which provides cloud cybersecurity services and domain name system services. Any disruption to Cloudflare results in problems accessing the cloud and disruption to the internet.
Then there are companies like Lumen Technologies, the US telecoms company that plays a critical role in global network connections. Lumen Technologies operates a tier-one network. Tier one networks are the “motorways of the internet” as they provide high-capacity critical global links.
There are around 14 tier one networks. Any disruption of them would result in the fragmentation of the internet into smaller isolated networks that would be disconnected from one another. Without the tier one networks, tier two networks would be left to provide service support – and these operate only regionally or nationally.
The list also includes companies like Swift, which facilitates cross-border payments. More than 11,000 financial institutions are connected to Swift, and this company plays a central role in the global financial ecosystem.
Any disruption to Swift could spark chaos, with problems transferring money around the world or some financial institutions experiencing duplication of payment transfers.
Then there are telecommunications companies, such as Verizon, Rogers or BT. Both Verizon (2019) and Rogers (2022) have been involved in localised internet outages of short duration. Rogers, the Canadian telecommunications company, updated its network in 2022 and the outcome was a one-day outage that impacted on the country’s critical infrastructure – debit payments, banking services and even hospitals and emergency service calls.
The plexus is configured around satellites and around 1.5 million kilometres of submarine fibre-optic cables that connect continents but which people are largely unaware of. Something like a natural disaster could damage these cables at any time, causing a catastrophic failure.
And there is a symbiotic relationship between the plexus and energy generation. Power failure could be a result of a fault with the plexus, which itself cannot operate without power.

The complexity of the plexus means that it is vulnerable to human error, as appears to have been the case in the CrowdStrike event. Then there are equipment failures and maintenance issues. Bad weather can also impact its operation, causing localised outages.
On top of all this, it could be vulnerable to various types of cyberattacks, such as malware or border gateway protocol hijacking. In addition, tier one network cables are critical global infrastructure and can be damaged accidentally or targeted by terrorists or hostile military forces.
For people, companies and governments, the key is to have contingencies in place to be prepared for failures and outages. But most of us are unprepared.
Any long-term disruption to the plexus would make everyday living exceedingly difficult, with the potential for looting and disturbances if, for example, internet-connected alarms were hit.
In the most severe cases – thankfully not seen in the CrowdStrike incident but tragically present in the case of internet outages in Sudan when emergency food supplies were disrupted – plexus failures can even cause death.
All this suggests that while there are undeniable advantages from the evolution of the cyber-energy-production-plexus, there remain a great many known and unknown risks.
At the same time but another location, another huge AI event: Get ready folks, everything is about to change. Digital AI control of everything is coming starting this year 2026 and to be fully implemented by the end of 2027. At least that is their plan.
