Human activity can already dam rivers, clear-cut jungles, irrigate deserts, and change the very climate. Now, our technology may be on the doorstep of turning nighttime to day. That’s the word out of Washington, where the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) just approved a proposal by the Hawthorne, Calif.-based company Reflect Orbital to loft a satellite with a 60-ft. wide mirror that will catch and beam sunlight back to the Earth, artificially illuminating a patch of otherwise-dark ground.
The launch, which could take place this summer, is just a beta test of the basic technology, but Reflect Orbital—which bills itself as “The Sunlight Company”—has big things in mind. If this first satellite proves itself, mission planners envision lofting 36 satellites by next year, 5,000 by 2030, and a staggering 50,000 by 2035.
“We’re grateful to the FCC for recognizing the importance of testing novel technologies in space,” said Ben Nowack, co-founder and CEO of Reflect Orbital, in a statement. “This license is the first step toward rigorously testing our technology’s efficacy and the safeguards we have developed.”
The company envisions multiple uses for sun-reflecting satellites: assisting search and rescue operations, allowing construction projects to operate around the clock, charging solar power stations, increasing crop yield. But critics cite all manner of risks. Human and animal circadian rhythms could be badly affected if the sun—or a simulacrum of it—never sets. The practice of changing the clocks by a mere hour twice a year is already known to mess with human sleep-wake cycles, after all. Plants could bloom when they shouldn’t and die before their time. Orbital mirrors flashing and winking back to Earth could distract airline pilots. Finally, light pollution is already interfering with astronomical observations—a problem made even worse by satellite constellations like SpaceX’s 10,000-strong Starlink fleet. Reflect Orbital’s 50,000 birds would dwarf even that.
“Astronomers worry that a constellation of orbital mirrors like Reflect Orbital is planning might compromise the ability to view the night skies,” says John Logsdon, professor emeritus at George Washington University’s Elliott School of International Affairs, where he was long-time director of the school’s Space Policy Institute.
Nowack disagrees. “From the beginning, we’ve been designing our satellites to be very precise,” he tells TIME. “We want to precisely control where our sunlight is going, and we only want to light up areas that want that sunlight.”
The company’s initial efforts will be modest. The first satellite, named Eärendil-1—after the Old English word for morning star—will shed only as much light as a full moon, across a 6,000-acre area, or about the size of an airport. And that faint illumination will not last long—just five minutes before the satellite, which will be orbiting 400 miles up at 17,500 miles per hour, moves out of range. But if the first launch succeeds, those metrics could change fast. By next year, the 36 satellites that are projected to be aloft will be able to reflect down the equivalent of nighttime street lighting, with multiple mirrors at different spots in orbit cooperating to provide 2.5 hours of light. The 5,000 satellites planned for 2030 will produce the equivalent of daylight for a few minutes at a time, the equivalent of indoor lighting for up to two hours, and all-night street lighting. And the 50,000-strong flock in 2035 will produce an as-yet unspecified number of hours of daylight illumination and ‘round the clock indoor-level lighting to customers who request it.
“The atmosphere is dynamic and turbulent, catching, throwing, and bouncing photons like mobile trampolines; that’s what gives us effects like stars twinkling at night,” says Lindsay DeMarchi, a policy analyst with The Aerospace Corporation’s Center for Space Policy and Strategy. “That’s many opportunities for interactions … to spread out or scatter light as photons travel from space to Earth’s surface.”
The astronomical community is mobilizing against Reflect Orbital. In a letter sent to the FCC on June 2—prior to the agency’s approval of the company’s operations—the American Astronomical Society (AAS) sought to halt the upcoming launch, citing the light pollution problem, the potential for eye damage if amateur astronomers view the satellite through a telescope, the risk to pilots and drivers who might be distracted or temporarily blinded by the artificial light, and the waste of federal research dollars if the work of government-funded observatories is compromised. The group sought to distinguish Eärendil-1 from other satellites, which also unavoidably reflect some light and yet routinely receive FCC approval.
“AAS opposes the granting of a license to Reflect Orbital, because this application is fundamentally different from those for telecommunications satellites,” the letter argued. “The proposed satellite would be intentionally reflecting sunlight to Earth and is designed to be as bright as possible, making impacts on astronomical research extremely challenging to mitigate.”
Nowack stands by his insistence that incoming light from his satellites will be finely focused, while also promising that in some cases he’d be willing to refuse service to a potential customer if someone on adjacent land objected. “If there’s a case where we want to serve a customer, but there’s a [person] nearby that doesn’t want the light, generally we’re not going to serve that customer,” he says.
He also argues that the satellite constellation he proposes to place in space could save lives here on Earth. “During the Venezuelan earthquakes,” Nowack says, “a dozen people reached out and said, ‘Hey, when it got dark, it was really hard to find people in the rubble. Is there any way you could light up the area and help aid emergency responders in saving all these lives?’”
For better or worse, the space mirror is coming—and potentially soon. Since the human species was born, it has lived under the canopy of the stars. Now we are preparing to change that canopy.

When the second stage of a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket failed to reach a high enough orbit on 11 July, the 20 Starlink satellites it released were doomed. Within a couple days, the satellites had fallen back into Earth’s atmosphere, burning up as anthropogenic meteor showers.
Although the demise of the 20 Starlink satellites was premature, such fiery “deorbits” are also the preferred way to dispose of spacecraft at the end of their operational lives, so they don’t drift on as space junk. But with commercial plans to put many tens of thousands of satellites into orbit in vast megaconstellations, researchers are starting to wonder about the atmospheric consequences when those spacecraft are retired in large numbers. Recent studies highlight growing concerns over the rising concentrations of metal particles and gases from satellites that can linger in the stratosphere for years, potentially catalyzing the destruction of ozone.
“Almost no one is thinking about the environmental impact on the stratosphere,” says atmospheric chemist Daniel Murphy of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s Chemical Sciences Laboratory. “It would be better to understand it now than when there’s much more.”
For now, the mass of such disposals is just 3% of the natural input of meteors from space, aka shooting stars, according to a 2021 analysis by Leonard Schulz of the Technical University of Braunschweig and colleagues. But in a future with 75,000 satellites, the injected humanmade mass rises to 40% that of meteors. And because satellites are large and burn up more slowly than most meteors, they could in this scenario nearly double from natural levels the amount of aerosols, small particles less than 1 micrometer in size, Schulz and colleagues found. “We shouldn’t just make this uncontrolled experiment with our atmosphere,” Schulz says.
In 2023, Murphy and colleagues reported the first direct evidence of how satellite re-entries are changing the composition of the stratosphere, based on data from a NASA WB-57 aircraft that flew from Alaska to altitudes of 19 kilometers. Using an onboard laser mass spectrometer, they found tiny droplets of sulfuric acid containing 20 different elements that likely came from satellites and rockets, as they were present in ratios that matched those of spacecraft alloys. The amounts of lithium, aluminum, copper, and lead all exceeded the estimated contributions from meteors.
Concerns are mostly focused on aluminum, the most common component in satellites. If the disintegrated metal ends up as aluminum oxide or hydroxide, it can react with hydrogen chloride—the main reservoir of chlorine in the stratosphere, a hangover from the days of chlorofluorocarbons—to produce aluminum chloride. Hydrogen chloride is a relatively safe repository for chlorine, but aluminum chloride is easily split apart by light, freeing the chlorine to destroy ozone. Metal aerosols could also seed the creation of more polar stratospheric clouds, which catalyze reactions that liberate destructive forms of chlorine. “One can speculate, but without critical laboratory measurements of the chemistry, it’s very hard to know [the effects],” says John Plane, an atmospheric chemist at the University of Leeds.
Some of those unknowns are starting to be pinned down. Last month, José Ferreira, an aerospace engineer at the University of Southern California, and his colleagues reported the results of a simulation of satellite aluminum burning up on re-entry. They estimate that a typical 250-kilogram satellite would generate 30 kilograms of aluminum oxide nanoparticles. Given the 2000 deorbits that occurred in 2022, that amounts to 17 tons—a 30% rise above the amount from natural sources. In an era of megaconstellations, that could lead to 360 tons entering the atmosphere per year.
Although Ferreira did not model the amount of ozone that would be destroyed at these levels of aluminum, he says industry should start to think about using other materials or extending satellite lifetimes by servicing and refueling in orbit. Adam Mitchell, a materials engineer at the European Space Agency, says eventually industry should move away from deorbits as much as possible. “The in-space circular economy is so important, and this should be the long-term strategy: refueling, repairing, recycling, in-space manufacturing, and relaunch from space.”
Minkwan Kim of the University of Southampton has just started a project funded by the UK Space Agency to identify gaps in knowledge related to satellite re-entries and provide guidance for industry and regulators. There are multiple possible environmental impacts, he says, but “we need very solid scientific evidence.” The important thing is “to work with industry, listen to their voice,” he says.
Industry has only recently become aware of the issue, says Pierre Lionnet, managing director of ASD Eurospace, a space industry trade association. “Volume matters,” he says. Europe launches many fewer satellites than the United States. Its only constellation, the U.K.-based OneWeb, will have 650 satellites and it has no plans for larger deployments. “You have to wonder whether [SpaceX] is creating a major problem 30 years from now,” Lionnet says.
Samantha Lawler, an astronomer at the University of Regina, is already frustrated that bright reflections from Starlink satellites are harming ground-based astronomy. Then earlier this year, debris from a SpaceX rocket hit farmland near her home in Saskatchewan. “There’s too much stuff in orbit,” she says. “We can’t keep using the ground and the atmosphere as a dumpster.”

NASA and modern astronomy maintain that the Moon is a solid, spherical, Earth-like habitation which man has actually flown to and set foot on. They claim the Moon is a non-luminescent planetoid which receives and reflects all its light from the Sun. The reality is, however, that the Moon is not a solid body, it is clearly circular, but not spherical, and not in any way an Earth-like planetoid which humans could set foot on. In fact, the Moon is largely transparent and completely self-luminescent, shining with its own unique light.
The Sun’s light is golden, warm, drying, preservative and antiseptic, while the Moon’s light is silver, cool, damp, putrefying and septic. The Sun’s rays decrease the combustion of a bonfire, while the Moon’s rays increase combustion. Plant and animal substances exposed to sunlight quickly dry, shrink, coagulate, and lose the tendency to decompose and putrify; grapes and other fruits become solid, partially candied and preserved like raisins, dates, and prunes; animal flesh coagulates, loses its volatile gaseous constituents, becomes firm, dry, and slow to decay. When exposed to moonlight, however, plant and animal substances tend to show symptoms of putrefaction and decay.
In direct sunlight a thermometer will read higher than another thermometer placed in the shade, but in full, direct moonlight a thermometer will read lower than another placed in the shade. If the Sun’s light is collected in a large lens and thrown to a focus point it can create significant heat, while the Moon’s light collected similarly creates no heat. In the “Lancet Medical Journal,” from March 14th, 1856, particulars are given of several experiments which proved the Moon’s rays when concentrated can actually reduce the temperature upon a thermometer more than eight degrees.
So sunlight and moonlight clearly have altogether different properties, and furthermore the Moon itself cannot physically be both a spherical body and a reflector of the Sun’s light! Reflectors must be flat or concave for light rays to have any angle of incidence; If a reflector’s surface is convex then every ray of light points in a direct line with the radius perpendicular to the surface resulting in no reflection.

The US Approves Launch of Mirror Satellite That Can Reflect Sunlight and Illuminate the Earth at Night
On July 9, the US Federal Communications Commission authorized Reflect Orbital to build, launch, and operate a mirror satellite in low Earth orbit. The experimental satellite, named Eärendil-1, would be capable of reflecting sunlight onto specific locations on Earth during the night. The project has long drawn criticism from astronomers and environmental advocates.
WIRED wrote about Reflect Orbital’s giant mirror in September 2024, when the project was still in its early stages: “The ambitious goal of the Santa Monica, California–based startup is to ensure a continuous supply of light for large solar panel installations, allowing them to generate electricity even at night and thereby overcoming one of the main limitations of this renewable energy source.” Two years later, the Trump administration has given the green light to this provider of “on-demand” sunlight.
Equipped with an 18-meter reflector, Eärendil-1 could illuminate areas 5 to 6 kilometers in diameter for brief periods (the mirror satellite’s name is a reference to a character from J.R.R. Tolkien’s Lord of the Rings series).

“We’re grateful to the FCC for granting our application to fly our test mission,” the company said on social media. “This ruling is hugely validating for our company and reflects America’s leadership in testing innovative space technology.”
The US startup argues that this highly controversial technology could have a variety of civilian, commercial, and government applications. These include providing illumination for search-and-rescue operations, supporting critical infrastructure during emergencies, extending productive hours for solar energy facilities, and temporarily lighting remote construction sites without relying on conventional generators.
Beyond “Let Us Sleep”
Eärendil-1 would be only the beginning. Reflect Orbital envisions operating 50,000 satellites by 2035. And that’s just one company. If the initiative succeeds, it could give rise to an entirely new global industry—something that is already keeping many people awake, for now at least figuratively. “Imagine the sky filled with moons,” says Tony Tyson, a researcher at UC Davis and chief scientist for the Vera C. Rubin Observatory. Tyson remains skeptical that these satellites will be able to direct reflected light with the precision the startup claims.
During the regulatory review process, the FCC received nearly 2,000 public comments questioning the proposal. Among its leading critics were the American Astronomical Society, DarkSky International, and the Royal Astronomical Society. These organizations warn about the potential effects such satellites could have on astronomy, nocturnal ecosystems, and aviation safety.
Opponents argue that ground-based observatories already have to contend with thousands of satellites in low Earth orbit that interfere with astronomical observations. Even a small number of space-based mirrors could increase light pollution and make observations more difficult, while a future large-scale satellite constellation would radically transform the appearance of the night sky. “For optical astronomy, this is an existential threat, and we hope that the regulators will share that view,” said Betty Kioko, institutional affairs officer for the European Southern Observatory, in a statement ahead of the FCC decision.
Some researchers have also raised concerns about possible flashes of reflected light that could affect aircraft pilots, drivers, or wildlife that depends on natural cycles of light and darkness.
Despite those objections, the FCC concluded that the application covers only a single experimental satellite, not a commercial constellation. In its decision, the agency states that Eärendil-1 is a limited-duration technology demonstration whose results will help determine whether the concept is technically viable and identify the challenges associated with any future developments. Any future deployment of multiple satellites would require new regulatory approvals.
The agency also declined to address concerns related to astronomy. “We find that concerns regarding Eärendil-1’s impact on optical astronomy fall outside the scope of our review and authorization of this space station and therefore do not provide a basis for denying Reflect Orbital’s application or imposing additional operating conditions,” the FCC said.
On its website, the company pledged to engage with affected stakeholders and the scientific community. “Reflect Orbital is earning the right to operate and expand. That means demonstrating that reflected sunlight can be precisely controlled, used only where appropriate, limited in brightness and duration, and coordinated with affected communities and scientific institutions. It means measuring real-world impacts rather than relying on assumptions. And it means being willing to change course if the evidence does not

The most exciting thing that happened to me in 2021 while working from home is the discovery of the “magic mirror.” The so called “magic mirror” was first created in China during the Han dynasty (202 BC – 220 AD) and known as the “transparent mirror” (透光鏡), because when placed in sunlight, the mirror projects the decorative design on the back of the mirror and seems to become transparent. Four such mirrors are in the collection of the Shanghai Museum.
The front of the Art Museum’s mirror is the standard polished reflective surface like any other mirror and the back is marked with six-characters, “南無阿彌陀佛,” the name of Amida Buddha (or Amitābha). Amida is the main deity in the Jodo (Pure Land) sect of Buddhism, which believes that salvation is ensured for all those who invoke Amida’s name with sincere devotion.
The Museum’s mirror, however, appears to be even more magical than the Han dynasty “magic mirror,” since, under special lighting conditions, it projects not the characters on the back, but rather a completely concealed image of an Amida Buddha surrounded by numerous emanating rays of light. Ancient “magic mirrors” are very rare because of the great difficulties in making them. This mirror is now on display in the East Asian Gallery (G140).

DAVENPORT, Iowa (February 25, 2024) – The Putnam Museum and Science Center unveiled an amazing discovery at the fundraising gala Mysteries at the Museum last night. For over 100 years the Putnam has had a “Magic Mirror” from Japan sitting in collections without realizing it. Nora Moriarty and the Putnam curatorial team discovered the mirror in 2022 and after a lengthy authentication process, the museum is ready to bring the mirror to the public.
The magic mirror is a bronze mirror that is engraved on the back in Chinese characters reading “Homage to Amitābha [Buddha]”. But what is so special about this mirror is that when light hits it at just the right angle, an image that would otherwise be completely hidden to the naked eye is projected onto the wall. These mirrors were popular in Japan during the Edo and Meiji periods, and are exceedingly rare as they were difficult to make and possibly expensive to purchase. As of today we know of only three of this type of incredible mirror in the United States: this mirror, one at the Cincinnati Art Museum, and one at the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
“This is a significant find not only for the Putnam Museum, but for the world as well” shared Nora Moriarty Curatorial Project Coordinator. “There are very few of these mirrors currently identified, and a new addition like ours may help scholars learn about where and when they were created.” This mirror was purchased in 1904 in Japan by Charles Ficke who brought it back to his home town of Davenport and later included it in a large donation to the Putnam Museum. In his records, Ficke lists this mirror as a “Magic Mirror” but over time that knowledge was lost to the Putnam Museum records until one Friday afternoon when Nora Moriarty began to become curious about the bronze mirrors in the Putnam collection after reading about one recently discovered at the Cincinnati Art Museum. After some trial and error with a flashlight, the team saw evidence that this mirror might truly be magic. With the help of Genesis Health System the museum was able to perform a CT scan on the mirror so that they could see the layers inside. What was found was an amazing image of Amitābha Buddha between the layers of the mirror that can only be seen under perfect lighting conditions.
“It was an exciting moment, illuminating the mirror in the darkness with a flashlight. I thought I saw the image of a buddha that day, but I wasn’t sure. Seeing my suspicions confirmed in that CT scan was beyond exciting. I knew then that we truly had something special here at the Putnam Museum” shared Nora. The Magic Mirror will be on temporary display beginning Tuesday February 27 for a limited time at the Putnam. It will eventually be moved to a permanent display during a separate project at the museum connected to the capital campaign.
