THE MOST IMPORTANT SIGN OF THE END TIMES – Ask yourself -Why do they rail so hard against?

That is precisely the reason.  God told us it would be the ONLY sign that will be given to us.

But he answered them, “An evil and adulterous generation seeks after a sign, but no sign will be given it but the sign of Jonah the prophet.  Matthew 12:39

An evil and adulterous generation seeks after a sign, and there will be no sign given to it, except the sign of the prophet Jonah.   Matthew 16:4

I am reminded of how God sent the prophets one by one to warn the Jewish People. The hard-hearted Jews refused to accept or believe, and they killed the messengers of God.

My friends, God told us there would only be ONE SIGN given to us.  He limited himself to One Signa, but I believe that was so that there would be no confusion.  He KNEW that in the last days, signs would be EVERYWHERE as indeed they are.  It should be clear to everyone that we are coming to the end of the world as we know it.  Since God told us that the ONLY SIGN we would receive that would tell us when the end is near would be the SIGN OF JONAH, he has been sending THAT SIGN repeatedly in the last decade. This Video of Two Kayakers Being Eaten by a Whale Is Going Viral

The footage shows the moment when the paddlers are mistakenly scooped up by a humpback
video whale swallows kayakers

A shocking video that was recorded off the California coast years ago has resurfaced on social media. Filmed in November 2020, the short clip shows the hair-raising moment when a large humpback whale nearly swallowed two kayakers whole.

The two kayakers, Julie McSorley and Liz Cottriel, were paddling a tandem kayak together in San Luis Obispo Bay when they unintentionally became the stars of the viral video. Their boat was one of several that had drifted out beyond the surf where a group of humpback whales was feeding on the surface.

The video, which was recorded by another whale-watcher on a different vessel, shows Cottriel, McSorley, and the other boaters looking on as the humpbacks breach the surface to gorge on balls of baitfish. Cottriel and McSorley suddenly find themselves in the middle of all this bait as a whale breaks the surface directly underneath them, its giant mouth agape. The whale appears to swallow the kayak whole before it closes its mouth and falls back into the ocean.

As the water settles, however, the overturned kayak and the two uninjured paddlers can be seen floating on the surface. Because of the angle of the video, it’s unclear how long the kayakers were in the whale’s mouth—or if they were even swallowed at all.

“I thought it was going to land on me,” Cottriel told reporters after the incident. “Next thing I know I’m underwater.”

McSorley explained that all she felt was the boat rise before she found herself underwater. She could never tell if she was underneath the whale, in its mouth, or what actually happened during those few brief seconds.

“They were telling us, ‘You were in the mouth, you were in the whale’s mouth!’” McSorley said. “But we didn’t have any idea at that time. And it didn’t really hit us until we watched the video later.”

Looking back on the incident, Cottriel and McSorley were also hit with the realization that they were far too close to the feeding whales at the time. The two paddlers said they would be giving whales much more space in the future.

Federal law prohibits paddlers, anglers, and other members of the public from approaching whales or getting too close to the large mammals. A good rule of thumb, according to NOAA Fisheries, is to stay at least 100 yards from whales unless other rules apply. The California Division of Boating and Waterways offers the same advice, stating that “boaters, including paddle boarders and kayakers, should not approach a whale within 300 feet.”

Swallowed Alive: This Incredible Man Survived Inside A Whale’s Stomach For Three Days

In a tale of biblical proportions, it appears as though we have the second coming. Not of Christ, but of Jonah.

Earlier in 2016, 56-year-old Spanish fisherman Luigi Marquez went through a nightmarish experience as he was swallowed whole by a whale, presumed dead by all who knew him, but then returned after three days and nights to tell the tale.

Marquez’s Whale Ordeal

After a routine fishing trip went sour, hitting stormy weather, Marquez was thrown overboard and into the turbulent sea. Once the weather had calmed, coastal guards tried to locate him for a number of days, searching huge areas of the ocean.

However, in the end, he was believed to be dead, and his devastated wife was informed. He disappeared for several days before returning to share his tale of survival.

Unbelievably, after three days Marquez returned home, with a whopper of a story, which he shared with family, friends, and local news reporters.

A Tale of Survival

“It is the most frightening thing I have ever lived” Marquez told reporters who caught wind of his story quickly after his return home to his very surprised wife. When asked to describe what it was like in the belly of the whale he went on to explain,

Everything was pitch black and I was shivering cold. The only things that kept me alive were the raw fish I ate and the light from my waterproof watch.”

For 72 hours, Marquez did what he had to do to survive, eating only that which had been swallowed by the whale. Unfortunately, this also meant that he was living surrounded by the contents of the whale’s stomach, “I will never forget that horrible stench of putrid decomposition. I had to wash for three days before the odor went away.”

Home Safe and Sound

After three days of the horrendous ordeal, the whale then “flushed away” Marquez and he was rescued and brought home to share his story of incredible survival and determination.

Penelope Marquez, the fisherman’s wife recognized the miraculous nature of the story, “This is truly a miracle! Saint Mary of Jesus has heard our prayers” she told reporters. “I never lost faith, and the Lord has brought me back my precious Luigi.

Although some people have cast doubt on Marquez’s tale, he maintains that it happened. Either way, it seems as though Marquez had a whale of a time!

A DIVER has revealed the terrifying moment he was swallowed whole by a great white shark as it tried to eat him alive.

Eric Nerhus, from Eden, Australia, is one of very few who have been inside the jaws of the fearsome predator and survived to tell the tale.

Eric was scouring reefs for abalone – a type of edible sea snail – at Cape Howe on New South Wales’ rugged southern coastline in January, 2007.

But as he was diving, a great white shark charged him swallowing his head and torso whole.

The monstrous creature then tried to swallow him, crushing his head and chest, which were only protected by his heavy diving gear.

Inside, it was pitch black as Eric looked down the back of its throat with his arm dangling in front.

As its teeth gnashed into his flesh and started to thrash him around, Eric was now in for the fight of his life a horrific ordeal that he will never forget.

An incident report obtained by The Sun Online from the Global Shark Accident File can now reveal the horrific details that ensued.

It all began around 9am when Eric began his 26ft descent to the sea floor and started bagging the highly sought after mollusc.

He was 41 at the time and was working as a professional abalone diver.

Weather reports on the day forecasted rough conditionsfierce enough to deter most seasoned divers from taking the plunge.

In the weeks prior, there had also been some white pointer sightings in the area due to unusually cold waters.

However, it was a spot Eric had dived on 100 times before.

And that morning his 16-year-old son, Mark, was his trusted deckhand.

Eric said: “When you are a diver and you’re in that domain you’ve got that inkling in the back of your mind wondering if a shark will show up.

“A bob of seals or big fish shoot past you… you think ‘ok I wonder what’s chasing them’

“That’s when the hair on the back of your neck will stand up.”

Abalone divers can spend up to eight hours below the surface using lead weight vests to control their buoyancy.

They are usually hooked up to a machine on the boat that feeds them oxygen through a hose that’s connected to an industry-grade mask.

Despite that day’s murky water, Eric was in his element, casually making his way around submerged boulders.

He was in the tranquillity of the deep blue Tasman Sea and the only thing he could hear was the hum of his air regulator.

He took a reassuring upwards glance at the hull of his boat and continued on with the task at hand.

Next minute, everything went black.

Eric came to the vice-like pressure of his torso being crushed between two trucks colliding.

Eric said: “One minute it was day light, the next second everything went black.

“Inside the jaws it was just dark, I couldn’t see anything because I was looking down the back of his throat.

“I’ve never experienced anything like it.”

Remarkably, Eric was still alive.

The shark’s first bite was absorbed by his diving mask and air regulator, which split and broke his nose instantly.

Angered that its prey had not relented, the monster took a wider chomp pushing the man further down its pharynx.

This time, the brunt of the bite was taken by his lead-weight vest.

And at least 14 sharp jagged teeth had now sunk in and had a grip of him.

Eric said: “I started to get shaken horizontally with a really hard threshing motion.

“I thought ‘is this the end, is this what is like to die’.

“I was actually being eaten alive.”

Amid the horror, his survivalist instinct kicked in and he felt around for its eye socket and proceeded to gouge it.

Suddenly the clamp of the jaws released.

Eric said: “I started to wriggle out backwards and I wasn’t sure if I was going to get out or not.

Just as I thought I was getting free, the bottom jaw closed and I felt the teeth sink into the back of my head and into my skull.

I twisted its eye as hard as I could and the shark reacted again and let go.

Eric managed to escape and quickly put the regulator back in his mouth to get some oxygen.

The terror, however, was not over.

According to Aidan Martin, a shark scientist, one of the hunting strategies of a white shark is to make an initial, crippling bite on a prey animal, then retreat until it bleeds out and becomes an easier meal.

The man was now hovering above the sea floor, blood spewing out of his lacerations and was being tightly circled by the shark with its black, glassy five inch eye traced on him.

Eric said: “The big round black eye was staring straight into my face with not one hint of fear of any boat, any human, or any other animal in the sea.

“It was the scariest site I have ever seen.”

Eric calmed himself and had to make the daring decision to swim for the boat.

He spread his arms and legs in an attempt to alert the shark that he was not a seal.

Eric slowly made his way to the top with the shark still circling, brushing his flippers with its tank-like body.

He broke the surface and his son desperately pulled him aboard.

Emergency crews were reached and he was flown to Wollongong hospital by a Snowy Hydro rescue helicopter. He required 75 surgical sutures to stitch him back up but the tough Aussie had survived.

The fear, however, was too much to ever return to the water.

Eric said: “I am glad I am still around.

“Sometimes you get a break in life… I’m a working man that just wanted to survive very, very badly, at all costs.

“I have no animosity towards the shark because I realise it obviously mistook me for its natural prey, which possibly would be a seal.

“When you think about it, this was probably a one in ten million chance of escape.”

For his pal John Smythe, who has been diving for more than 50 years, it was the most epic tale of survival he had come across.

He told The Sun Online: “I’ve been hassled by makos, stalked by wobbies, crawled under rocks to hide from big whites… but Eric’s escape was incredible.”

The recollection comes as Australia experiences a surge in shark attacks.

The occurrence of unprovoked shark bites has increased globally for more than 30 years but Australia has been identified as a “hotspot”.

Those claims were backed up by a study that was published last year called: Increased shark bite survivability revealed by two centuries of Australian records.

While bull shark survivability increased over time between 1807 and 2018 survivability decreased for both tiger and white sharks.

Especially when the person was doing an in water activity, such as swimming or diving.

Just a month ago, 16-year-old Stella Berry was mauled to death by a shark.

It was Western Australia’s first fatal shark attack in the Swan River for 100 years.

As of March 2023, there have been seven shark attacks in the country, three of which have been fatal.

And by October last year, seven people had already been killed by sharks.

It was a spike that had not been seen in the country for 86 years.

The highest annual figure on record was in 1929, with nine deaths.

However, the probability of shark-human interaction is extremely low and the likelihood of a bite being fatal is even lower.

Could a Whale REALLY Swallow a Boat Whole? The Surprising Truth

A blue whale, the largest animal on Earth, could potentially fit a grapefruit or a small basketball down its throat, but certainly not a human, let alone a boat.

From ancient mariner tales to blockbuster movies, the image of a whale swallowing a human or even an entire boat whole is a captivating, almost primal fear. This enduring myth, deeply woven into our folklore and popular culture, finds its most famous manifestation in the biblical tale of Jonah and the Whale. But beyond the epic narratives and sensational headlines, how much truth is there to the idea of a whale capable of such an incredible feat?

In this investigative piece, we’ll dive deep to explore the true plausibility of these stories, dissecting documented cases against widespread hoaxes, and, most importantly, uncovering the immutable biological limitations that dictate what a whale can truly swallow. Prepare to uncover a surprising truth, grounded in fascinating scientific evidence, that will forever change how you view these magnificent giants of the deep.

When Giants Attack: Whale Swallows Boat Whole! 🐋😱
Image taken from the YouTube channel Ocean Beasts Unleashed , from the video titled When Giants Attack: Whale Swallows Boat Whole! 🐋😱 .

As we delve into the most captivating and often misunderstood aspects of the natural world, few narratives seize our collective imagination quite like the dramatic encounter between humans and the ocean’s gentle giants.

Swallowed Whole? Unmasking the Enduring Myth of the Man-Eating Leviathan

The very thought of it sends shivers down the spine: a human, or even an entire vessel, engulfed in the cavernous maw of a colossal whale. This captivating, yet often profoundly misunderstood, image has permeated our consciousness for centuries, painting whales as formidable, indiscriminate predators capable of swallowing anything in their path. It’s a primal fear, a testament to the immense power of the deep, and a narrative deeply woven into the fabric of human storytelling.

The Deep Roots of a Colossal Tale

From ancient mariners’ terrifying legends to modern cinematic blockbusters, the idea of a whale swallowing a human whole persists as a powerful cultural trope. Popular culture revels in depicting these majestic creatures as fearsome leviathans with an insatiable appetite, capable of unimaginable feats of ingestion. This pervasive imagery isn’t merely a recent phenomenon; it’s a legacy echoing through countless generations. Perhaps the most iconic and enduring example comes from the annals of religious texts: the biblical tale of Jonah and the Whale. In this legendary narrative, the prophet Jonah is swallowed by a “great fish” and survives three days and nights inside its belly before being regurgitated onto dry land. Such stories have cemented the myth of the human-swallowing whale firmly in our collective psyche, making it incredibly difficult to disentangle fact from fiction.

An Investigative Dive into the Deep End

But how much truth lies behind these captivating tales? Is it truly plausible for a whale to swallow a human, let alone an entire boat? This exploration aims to pull back the curtain on this enduring myth. We will embark on an investigative journey to assess the scientific plausibility of such events, moving beyond folklore to confront the biological realities. Our quest will involve dissecting documented cases—distinguishing legitimate, albeit rare, incidents from the widespread hoaxes and misinterpretations that have fueled the myth for so long. Ultimately, we will uncover the often surprising biological limitations that govern what a whale can truly swallow, revealing how these magnificent creatures are fundamentally designed.

Prepare to challenge long-held beliefs as we sift through scientific evidence, anatomical facts, and historical accounts to uncover the surprising truth behind the man-eating whale, approaching this fascinating subject with an analytical and investigative eye. To truly understand the realities of a whale’s capacity, we must first turn our attention to the very architecture that defines these magnificent ocean dwellers.

While the enduring myth of the man-eating whale continues to capture imaginations and fuel maritime folklore, a closer look at the intricate mechanics of their biology reveals a stark reality: their very anatomy presents a formidable, often overlooked, barrier to such colossal consumption.

The Whale’s Hidden Hurdle: Why Biology Itself Forms a ‘Bottleneck’ to Big Meals

Despite their immense size and formidable presence, whales are bound by a set of fundamental biological limitations, particularly concerning their internal digestive pathways. Far from being cavernous, all-consuming beasts, their physical structures are highly specialized, designed for specific dietary niches rather than indiscriminate swallowing of large, solid objects. This specialization creates a ‘biological bottleneck’ that is crucial to understanding why the image of a whale gulping down a human or an entire boat is scientifically untenable.

Mouth Anatomy: A Purpose-Built Design

When we consider a whale’s mouth, it’s easy to be misled by its sheer scale. Many whale species possess mouths large enough to encompass a small car, but their internal structure is tailored for specific feeding strategies, not for swallowing large, solid prey.

  • Baleen Whales: These magnificent filter feeders, including species like the blue whale and humpback, have mouths equipped with vast plates of baleen, fringed keratinous structures that strain tiny organisms from immense volumes of water. While their mouths can take in a phenomenal amount of water and krill, their internal design, particularly the throat, is fundamentally unsuited for processing anything larger than a small fish or a cluster of shrimp.
  • Toothed Whales: Species such as sperm whales, orcas, and dolphins possess teeth, suggesting a more predatory lifestyle. While an orca’s teeth are formidable for tearing prey, they typically consume smaller, bite-sized portions. Sperm whales, famous for diving to incredible depths to hunt giant squid, have the largest throats among whales, but even their anatomy is optimized for the relatively soft, compressible bodies of cephalopods, not rigid, unwieldy objects like a human or a wooden vessel. Their teeth are primarily for gripping, not chewing or slicing in the way a shark’s are.

The Surprisingly Small Throat: A Biological Bottleneck

Perhaps the most compelling evidence against the man-eating myth lies in the surprisingly small diameter of a whale’s throat, especially when compared to their colossal body mass. This is the true ‘biological bottleneck.’

  • Disproportionate Size: For the vast majority of whale species, the esophagus – the tube connecting the throat to the stomach – is remarkably narrow. A blue whale, the largest animal on Earth, could potentially fit a grapefruit or a small basketball down its throat, but certainly not a human, let alone a boat.
  • Functional Design: This narrowness is not an oversight; it’s an evolutionary adaptation. Baleen whales feed on swarms of tiny organisms, which require no significant throat expansion. Toothed whales, even those that consume larger prey like squid, are designed to process items that are relatively uniform in shape and texture, easily maneuverable through a muscular, but still limited, passageway.

Why Swallowing a Human or Boat is Biologically Impossible

The implications of this anatomical reality are profound, challenging the very plausibility of the man-eating whale.

  • Physical Constraint: A human body, with its complex skeletal structure and often flailing limbs, is an incredibly awkward and rigid object. A boat, even a small one, is a hard, unyielding mass. For a whale’s throat and esophagus, attempting to swallow such an object would be akin to trying to push a solid, immovable boulder through a flexible garden hose.
  • Risk to the Whale: Far from being a deadly predator in this scenario, the whale itself would be in extreme danger. Attempting to swallow a human or boat would inevitably lead to choking, severe internal injury, or even suffocation as the object blocks the airway or tears the delicate tissues of the esophagus. The powerful muscular contractions involved in swallowing would only exacerbate the blockage and potential damage.
  • Digestive Pathway: Even if an object somehow bypassed the throat, a whale’s stomach and digestive system are not designed to break down large, solid, inorganic matter. It would simply remain as an undigestible, potentially lethal obstruction.

To illustrate this striking disparity between external size and internal capacity, consider the typical dimensions:

Whale Species/Group Typical Body Length (m) Typical Body Weight (tons) Estimated Throat Diameter (cm) Primary Diet
Blue Whale 25-30 100-200 15-30 (grapefruit-sized) Krill
Humpback Whale 12-16 25-40 10-25 (small melon-sized) Krill, small fish
Sperm Whale 11-18 35-45 30-50 (basketball-sized) Giant squid
Gray Whale 13-15 15-30 10-20 (small bowl-sized) Amphipods, small crustaceans

As this table clearly demonstrates, even the largest whales possess throats that are remarkably narrow relative to their colossal bodies, perfectly suited for their specialized diets but entirely inadequate for the consumption of anything as large and unyielding as a human or a boat.

This fundamental anatomical constraint is particularly evident when we delve into the specifics of baleen whales, whose majestic feeding apparatus points to an even more specialized, and less threatening, internal architecture.

While a whale’s overall anatomy presents the first major biological barrier, the specific feeding adaptations of the ocean’s largest inhabitants—the baleen whales—add another, even more definitive, layer of impossibility.

Could the Ocean’s Largest Mouth Be Its Smallest Throat?

When we picture a whale, we often imagine the colossal Blue Whale or the acrobatic Humpback. These creatures belong to a group known as baleen whales (Mysticeti), the true titans of the sea. The Blue Whale, the largest animal to have ever lived, can reach lengths of nearly 100 feet and weigh up to 200 tons. Their mouths alone are vast enough to hold a crowd of people. Yet, this immense scale is deeply misleading, as their internal anatomy reveals a system built for volume, not for swallowing anything large.

The Ingenious Filter-Feeding Mechanism

Unlike predators that hunt and pursue large, individual prey, baleen whales are bulk feeders. Their survival depends on consuming enormous quantities of tiny organisms to fuel their massive bodies. Their feeding strategy is a marvel of biological engineering:

  1. Engulfment: A whale opens its cavernous mouth and lunges forward, taking in a tremendous volume of water filled with prey. A Blue Whale can engulf over 20,000 gallons of water in a single mouthful.
  2. Filtration: The whale then closes its mouth and uses its powerful tongue to force the water out through the sides.
  3. Consumption: Trapped inside against a unique filtering apparatus are thousands of pounds of krill, copepods, and small fish, which the whale then licks off and swallows.

This entire process is designed for passively filtering small items from the water, not for actively capturing or consuming large objects.

A Mouth Lined with Bristles, Not Teeth

The key to this filter-feeding system is the replacement of teeth with baleen plates. Instead of ivory, a baleen whale’s upper jaw is lined with hundreds of overlapping plates made of keratin—the same protein found in human hair and fingernails. Each plate is triangular and frayed on the inner edge, forming a dense, mat-like curtain of bristles.

This structure serves as a highly effective sieve. It is perfectly designed to trap organisms as small as krill but is fundamentally incapable of tearing, chewing, or processing a solid, large object like a human or a boat hull. Anything too large to pass through the fine gaps in the baleen would simply be blocked and expelled with the exiting water.

The Anatomical Choke Point: An Impossibly Narrow Throat

Here we arrive at the most critical and non-negotiable fact: a baleen whale’s esophagus is incredibly small. Despite having a mouth that can be over 20 feet long, the throat of the gargantuan Blue Whale is estimated to be no wider than a grapefruit or a beach ball, measuring only a few inches in diameter. It is a biological bottleneck of extreme proportions.

This makes perfect evolutionary sense. Why would an animal that subsists entirely on tiny, shrimp-like creatures need a wide gullet? A narrow throat prevents them from accidentally swallowing large volumes of water along with their food

The Inevitable Outcome: Rejection, Not Ingestion

Given this anatomy, the scenario of a baleen whale swallowing a person is a physical impossibility. If a person or a small boat were to accidentally enter a feeding whale’s mouth, one of two things would happen:

  • Filtered Out: Most likely, the object would be immediately pushed back out with the thousands of gallons of water being expelled. The whale would treat it as an inedible obstruction.
  • Blocked by the Throat: In the highly improbable event that an object bypassed the baleen and reached the back of the mouth, it would come to a dead stop at the entrance to the esophagus. The whale’s gag reflex would take over, and the object would be forcefully ejected.

There is no pathway for a human-sized object to travel from a baleen whale’s mouth into its stomach.

But what about the whales armed with teeth, like the legendary Sperm Whale known for battling giant squid?

While the passive, filter-feeding nature of baleen whales makes them incapable of swallowing a person, our investigation must now turn to their formidable, tooth-bearing relatives.

Moby Dick’s Myth: Sizing Up the Sperm Whale’s Throat

When we shift our focus from baleen whales to the suborder Odontoceti, or toothed whales, the narrative changes dramatically. Unlike their filter-feeding cousins, these are active predators. This group includes everything from the agile dolphin to the apex predator orca and, most notably for our purposes, the legendary Sperm Whale. It is this deep-diving behemoth, the antagonist of maritime lore, that is most often cast as the villain in tales of being swallowed alive. But does its anatomy support the myth?

The Apex Predator of the Abyss

The Sperm Whale (Physeter macrocephalus) is an animal of extremes. It has the largest brain of any creature on Earth and can dive to depths of over 2,000 meters (6,500 feet) in search of its primary food source: squid, including the colossal giant squid. Its massive, block-shaped head, which can make up nearly a third of its body length, certainly gives the impression that it could swallow anything it wishes.

Its hunting method is one of brute force. A Sperm Whale doesn’t nibble; it uses its powerful jaws and a set of 20-26 large conical teeth on its lower jaw to seize and disable prey. These teeth are not for chewing in the way we understand it but for gripping, crushing, and tearing large squid into more manageable, albeit still massive, pieces.

Anatomical Reality: The Throat Bottleneck

Despite its gargantuan size and predatory prowess, the Sperm Whale’s anatomy presents an insurmountable obstacle to swallowing a human. The key lies in the size of its throat and esophagus.

  • Mouth vs. Throat: The whale’s mouth is enormous, but this is a tool for capturing prey, not a direct funnel to the stomach.
  • Esophagus Diameter: Past the powerful jaws, the pharynx narrows significantly. A Sperm Whale’s esophagus, while muscular and capable of stretching, is estimated to be no more than 30-50 centimeters (12-20 inches) in diameter at its absolute widest.

A human’s shoulders alone are wider than this. Even if a person were to somehow bypass the whale’s teeth and tongue, they would become lodged in the throat, unable to pass into the digestive system. The whale would be more likely to choke than to successfully swallow a person.

To put this in perspective, let’s compare the Sperm Whale to other familiar toothed predators of the sea.

Species Estimated Max Throat Diameter Typical Prey Feeding Method
Sperm Whale 30-50 cm (12-20 in) Giant Squid, Large Fish Suction, Gripping & Tearing
Orca (Killer Whale) 20-30 cm (8-12 in) Seals, Sea Lions, Fish, Dolphins Biting & Tearing into Chunks
Bottlenose Dolphin 5-7 cm (2-3 in) Small Fish, Squid Gripping & Swallowing Whole

As the table illustrates, even for the largest toothed whale, the throat is designed for swallowing torn-up portions of its specific, often soft-bodied prey, not for ingesting large, rigid objects like a human being or the hull of a boat.

The Impossibility of Survival

For the sake of argument, let’s entertain the impossible and imagine a person could somehow be forced down a Sperm Whale’s esophagus. The journey would be instantly and gruesomely fatal.

  1. Crushing and Suffocation: The moment of ingestion would involve immense pressure from the whale’s pharyngeal muscles, which would crush a human body. Furthermore, there is no air to breathe; suffocation would be immediate.
  2. The Digestive Gauntlet: A whale’s stomach is a multi-chambered system designed to break down tough squid beaks and flesh. It is flooded with powerful digestive acids and enzymes that would begin dissolving tissue on contact.

The notion of surviving inside a whale’s stomach for minutes, let alone days, is a biological fantasy. The internal environment of any whale is entirely incompatible with human life.

With the biological and anatomical evidence clearly demonstrating the impossibility of the event, we must now examine the compelling tales that have cemented this myth in our culture.

While the biology of even the largest toothed whale makes swallowing a human impossible, this scientific fact hasn’t stopped a flood of incredible stories claiming otherwise.

From Jonah’s Tomb to Bartley’s Tall Tale: Unraveling the Great Whale Hoaxes

For centuries, the image of a person being swallowed whole by a whale has been a powerful and enduring trope in human culture. These tales tap into our primal fears of the deep and our fascination with miraculous survival. However, when examined through a scientific and historical lens, these legendary accounts crumble, revealing themselves to be symbolic myths, elaborate hoaxes, and cautionary tales rather than credible biological events.

The Biblical Allegory: Jonah and the “Great Fish”

One of the most ancient and famous accounts is the biblical story of Jonah, a prophet who is swallowed by a “great fish” and survives in its belly for three days and three nights before being vomited onto shore.

  • Symbolic, Not Scientific: The vast majority of theological scholars and historians interpret the Book of Jonah not as a literal, historical record but as a symbolic allegory. Its central message is about obedience, repentance, and the universality of God’s mercy, not marine biology.
  • Translation Matters: It’s important to note that the original Hebrew text refers to a dag gadol, which translates to “great fish.” The specific identification of the creature as a “whale” came much later in translations, likely influenced by the large sea creatures known to inhabit the region.
  • The Implausibility: As established, even if it were a sperm whale, the only toothed whale large enough to even begin the process, survival would be impossible due to the lack of oxygen, crushing pressure, and corrosive digestive fluids. The story’s purpose is to convey a spiritual lesson, not to document an actual event.

The 19th-Century Hoax: The Incredible Lie of James Bartley

Perhaps the most persistent “modern” myth is the tale of James Bartley, a whaler who was allegedly swallowed by a sperm whale off the Falkland Islands in 1891. The story goes that two days later, when the crew killed the same whale, they found Bartley alive but unconscious inside its stomach, bleached white by the digestive acids. This tale was widely published and is still cited today as “proof” that a person can be swallowed and survive.

However, a thorough investigation reveals it to be a complete fabrication.

  • Historical Inconsistencies: The whaling ship central to the story, the Star of the East, was indeed real. However, historical records and the ship’s own muster list show no one named James Bartley ever served as a crew member.
  • An Explicit Denial: More damning is the evidence from the wife of the ship’s captain, Mrs. John Killam. In a 1906 letter, she responded to an inquiry about the story by stating, “There is not one word of truth in the whale story. I was with my husband all the years he was in the Star of the East. There was never a man lost overboard while my husband was in her. The sailor has told a great sea yarn.”
  • Scientific Impossibility: Beyond the historical debunking, the scientific facts remain. A person would have suffocated within minutes in the whale’s oxygen-deprived stomach. The powerful digestive enzymes would have begun breaking down skin and tissue almost immediately, and the immense pressure of the whale’s internal organs would be fatal.

To clarify the distinction between popular myths and reality, the following table summarizes these famous accounts.

Myth / Legend The Claim Factual Basis / Debunking
Jonah and the Whale A prophet survives for three days inside a “great fish” as a form of divine intervention. Interpreted as a religious allegory, not a literal event. The original text does not specify a whale. Biologically impossible.   The Word of God does not contain fantasies, nor does God EVER lie.
James Bartley In 1891, a whaler was swallowed by a sperm whale and rescued alive two days later from its stomach. Proven hoax. The name “James Bartley” is absent from the ship’s crew list. The captain’s wife explicitly denied the event ever happened. Both the company and the wife did not like the publicity and the embarassment.
Pinocchio A wooden puppet and his father, Geppetto, are swallowed by and live inside a monstrous whale named Monstro. A complete work of fiction from Carlo Collodi’s 1883 children’s book, The Adventures of PinocchioThis is a Disney fantasy.  It is an insult that it is placed here to make a mockery of the very real experiences of the parties in the other two.

Why These Myths Endure

If these stories are so clearly false, why do they have such a powerful hold on our collective imagination? The reasons are rooted deep in human psychology.

Everyone is missing the point altogether.  The question they have been asking is whether the story is true, whether anyone COULD survive inside a whale for three days.  First of all, there should be NO QUESTION that God’s Word is TRUE.  NEVER has any portion of the Bible been found to be untrue.  God is not a man that He would lie.  God’s nature does not allow for lying/telling untruths.
IT does not matter if the world cannot find any proof of the story.  No matter what scientists tell you about the physical factors that make it impossible for anyone to fully swallowed by a whale, or survive inside the body of a whale even for a short time, let alone 3 days.  Why does that not matter?  Because GOD is the Creator of all things.  He speaks things into existence.  NOTHING is Impossible for God.  What is impossible with man, is possible with GOD.   No matter how things appear, GOD has the final word.  His will will be done.  Even if you find yourself in the bowels of a GREAT WHITE SHARK, if it is God;s will that you make it out alive…you will make it out alive!

People of FAITH, who know the Lord, know that Nothing is Impossible with God.  People who do not KNOW God cannot discern TRUTH.  They are BLIND.  What they don’t understand, they mock.  They tell you to TRUST the “SCIENCE”, because that is the only thing to which they can cling for answers.

D0 YOU THINK THE BOOK OF JONAH IS IMPORTANT TO GOD?  DO YOU REALLY BELIEVE IT WAS A MISTAKE, A FABEL, A JOKE, OR WORSE YET A LIE?  LOOK AT HOW MANY TIMES THE WORD OF GOD REFERS TO JONAH.

Matthew 12:39

But he answered them, “An evil and adulterous generation seeks after a sign, but no sign will be given it but the sign of Jonah the prophet.

Matthew 12:40

For as Jonah was three days and three nights in the belly of the whale, so will the Son of Man be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth.
This is Jesus speaking and telling us that Jonah was in the belly of the whale 3 days and nights, as a sign of the coming of the Messiah, who was going to be in the earth 3 days and 3 nights.

Matthew 12:41

The men of Nineveh will stand up in the judgment with this generation, and will condemn it, for they repented at the preaching of Jonah; and behold, someone greater than Jonah is here.
This is Jesus, confirming that Jonah preached to Nineveh and they repented!!  Is he suggesting that in the last days, Nineveh will rise up again?

Matthew 16:4

An evil and adulterous generation seeks after a sign, and there will be no sign given to it, except the sign of the prophet Jonah.” He left them, and departed.
Jesus here is telling them that they should not wait for any signs…HIS death, boreal and ressurrection from the dead should be enough.  Again, he confirms Jonah’s mission, prophecy and WARNING for this generation!  I can tell you that the Ancient City of Nineveh has been uncovered and they are working to restore it.

Matthew 16:17

Jesus answered him, “Blessed are you, Simon Bar (son of) Jonah, for flesh and blood has not revealed this to you, but my Father who is in heaven.
Jesus called Simon the Son of Jonah, confirming the anointing on the family line by stating that GOD the Father in heaven had revealed the truth of Messiah’s identity to him.

Luke 11:29

When the multitudes were gathering together to him, he began to say, “This is an evil generation. It seeks after a sign. No sign will be given to it but the sign of Jonah, the prophet.  Ok, so far we have three instances of God saying the same thing exactly.

Luke 11:30

For even as Jonah became a sign to the Ninevites, so will also the Son of Man be to this generation.

Luke 11:32

The men of Nineveh will stand up in the judgment with this generation, and will condemn it: for they repented at the preaching of Jonah, and behold, one greater than Jonah is here.

John 1:42

He brought him to Jesus. Jesus looked at him, and said, “You are Simon the son of Jonah. You shall be called Cephas” (which is by interpretation, Peter).  The “Rock” upon which the Church is built is the TRUTH of Christ’s Idendity and Nature.  Revealed by God to Jonah and to his son “Simon”.

John 21:15

So when they had eaten their breakfast, Jesus said to Simon Peter, “Simon, son of Jonah, do you love me more than these?” He said to him, “Yes, Lord; you know that I have affection for you.” He said to him, “Feed my lambs.”   Christ again makes a point of stating the Simon/Peter is the son of Jonah. That has to have weight and meaning.

John 21:16

He said to him again a second time,Simon, son of Jonah, do you love me?” He said to him, “Yes, Lord; you know that I have affection for you.” He said to him, “Tend my sheep.”

John 21:17

He said to him the third time, Simon, son of Jonah, do you have affection for me?” Peter was grieved because he asked him the third time, “Do you have affection for me?” He said to him, “Lord, you know everything. You know that I have affection for you.” Jesus said to him, “Feed my sheep.

Jesus had previously given Simon a new ID/name.  Yet he continues to call him SIMON SON OF JONAH.

All those protests about how people just can’t give up the idea of people being swallowed by Whales.  They wish they could erase it from our psyche.  Yet, the media keeps posting the stories of people experiencing that very thing.  It seems in this generation, those episodes appear at regular intervals.  The entertainment industry, which was developed to train us in the way we should think, keeps producing movies about people being swallowed by whales.

Forget Deep Impact And Armageddon — Here Come Two Movies About People Swallowed By Whales
BY NINA STARNER MAY 7, 2025 1:38 PM EST

Walt Disney Productions/RKO Radio Pictures
Were you worried that there was only one upcoming movie where someone gets eaten by a whale? Fret not. There are two, actually.

Leslie Grace — an actor and singer known for “In the Heights” and the “Batgirl” movie that Warner Bros. deleted from existence — is set to star in director Felipe Vargas’ next movie “Propel” (per Variety), which is described as “‘Gravity’ meets ‘127 Hours’ underwater.” Grace will star as diver Kate Acosta, who ends up swallowed by an enormous sperm whale while performing a commercial dive … and who has to figure out how to escape with her life.

The particularly funny thing about this news is that “Whalefall,” a novel by Daniel Kraus, is also being adapted into a major motion picture. In March 2025, Deadline reported that Josh Brolin was in talks to join the project’s cast alongside star Austin Abrams, with Brian Duffield (“No One Will Save You”) serving as the film’s director. As I’ve already made clear, “Whalefall” follows a similar trajectory as “Propel.” This time, a scuba diver — played by Abrams — is searching for the remains of his father, who recently passed away, when he’s swallowed by — you guessed it — a sperm whale. With only one hour to figure out how to escape, the diver is stuck in a dire life-and-death situation.

If you’re at all familiar with, you know, movies, you probably know that two films coming out during the same timeframe with the same premise isn’t a brand-new situation. This has actually been happening for decades, so the good news for “Propel” and “Whalefall” is that they’re in pretty good company.

Propel and Whalefall will join the ‘dueling movies’ hall of fame

Buena Vista Pictures Distribution
The phenomenon of “dueling films,” or “twin films,” definitely isn’t new; in fact, the first known instance of this happening was in 1920 when two versions of “Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde” hit theaters. Since then, it’s happened a decent amount of times, like in 1986, when “Top Gun” and “Iron Eagle” — two movies about fighter pilots — came out, and that same year, both “Platoon” and “Full Metal Jacket” told relatively similar stories about serving in Vietnam. “Tombstone” and “Wyatt Earp,” which both happen to be about Earp, came out in 1993 and 1994, while “Showgirls” and “Striptease” released in 1995 and 1996. (I don’t think I need to explain the similarity there, right?)

Other famous examples include “Dante’s Peak” and “Volcano” in 1997, “Antz” and “A Bug’s Life” in 1998, and “Deep Impact” and “Armageddon” that same year. Even though this feels conspicuous — and like something studios might have wanted to avoid — it just keeps happening, like when “Chasing Liberty” and “First Daughter” both explored the experiences of a fictional First Daughter of the United States in 2004 and 2006’s “The Prestige” and “The Illusionist” both presented a gritty look at the world of practical magic (in the 19th century, specifically). As of this writing, the most recent “twin films” we can point two are probably the biopics “Piece by Piece” and “Better Man,” which both came out in 2024; both tell stories of real-life musicians in unexpected ways, whether Pharrell’s life story is being told via LEGO animations or Robbie Williams becomes an ape in a biopic that is, otherwise, completely straightforward.

Anyway, neither “Propel” or “Whalefall” has a release date just yet, but maybe whale lovers will be gifted a perfect double feature whenever the twin films do hit theaters.

In the Book of Jonah, Nineveh represented sin, much like Egypt in the story of the Exodus.  The story of Jonah has multiple facets and messages.  It demonstrates racial issues, it demonstrates pride, it demonstrates empathy or lack of it, it demonstrates God’s compassion and capacity for forgiveness, it demonstrates the need for missionary work and its effectiveness, demonstrates the tendency of human to run and or hide from God and its futility, and it demonstrates God’s ability to protect his children under in any situation.   It also demonstrates how God can use whoever he wants for whatever purpose He has in mind, because He is God.  His ways are far above ours, His works and His methods are always for the good.  He has a plan and purpose for everything He does, nothing is by chance or random.

Nineveh’ in the Bible – All 16 Bible verses / Bible passages – Jesus Everyday

Bible passages with ‘Nineveh’ in the book Matthew

Matthew 12:41 The men of Nineveh shall arise in judgment with this generation, and they shall condemn it. For, at the preaching of Jonah, they repented. And behold, there is a greater than Jonah here. Matthew 12:41

Bible passages with ‘Nineveh’ in the book Luke

Luke 11:32 The men of Nineveh will rise up, at the judgment, with this generation, and they will condemn it. For at the preaching of Jonah, they repented. And behold, more than Jonah is here.

Regarding the King of Nineveh mentioned in the story of Jonah, the Bible does not explicitly state that this king was the same as the Exodus Pharaoh. However, some rabbinic traditions connect the two. According to Midrashic sources, after surviving the Red Sea crossing, Pharaoh was spared to bear witness to the miracles and to share his story. One tradition holds that he went to Nineveh, became its king, and, upon hearing Jonah’s warning, ordered repentance to avert divine judgment Sefaria+1

Pharoah King of Egypt during the time of the Exodus is probably the very best judge of whether GOD is GOD.  He witnessed so many mighty and even frightening works of God.  In the movie Ten Commandments the defeated Pharoah makes an astonshing confession.  I love what he says!!
If, indeed, that same Pharoah was King of Nineveh when Jonah came with his proclamation… it is no wonder that he did not hesitate to call for fasting and repentance.  Not only that, but if Jonah knew that it was that Pharoah who was King of Nineveh, that is a good reason why he said HE KNEW they would repent.  Though, in reality, if God wanted them to repent it would not matter who was King…they would repent.  No doubt Jonah knew that too.  Afterall, the people of Israel were well acquainted with the power and wonder of GOD.

I thought it would be helpful to show the facts about the greatness of the city of Nineveh and more importantly the brutality.  This helps us to understand a little better why Jonah was not all that interested in seeing them repent.  He would rather they were destroyed.  You have to admit, he had good reason to feel that way.

Nineveh remains a site of biblical and Islamic heritage, linked to the prophet Jonah in both the Hebrew Bible and the Quran Wikipedia. The Tomb of Jonah (Nebi Yunus) is a key religious landmark, (it has been destroyed) though it has suffered damage iere.org+1.

DOES THE QURAN CONTAIN THE STORY OF JONAH AND THE WHALE?

Yes — the Qur’an does contain the story of Prophet Yunus (Jonah) and the whale. The narrative is found in several places, most fully in Surah As‑Saffat (37:139–148), with brief references in Surah Al‑Anbiya (21:87–88) and Surah Yunus (10:98) Iqra Online+1.

The Quranic Account

In Surah As‑Saffat, the Qur’an recounts that Yunus was sent to the people of Nineveh to guide them to the worship of Allah. They rejected his message, and in frustration, Yunus left his mission without Allah’s permission. He boarded a ship, but a storm arose. The sailors cast lots and cast him into the sea, where he was swallowed by a great fish (whale) Iqra Online+1.

Inside the fish’s belly, Yunus realized his mistake, glorified Allah, and prayed sincerely. Allah accepted his repentance, commanded the fish to release him, and cast him onto a shore where a gourd vine grew over him for shade and sustenance Iqra Online+1. Later, Yunus returned to Nineveh, where the people had repented and believed, and Allah allowed them to enjoy life for a time Wikipedia.

Key Verses

  • 37:139–148: Full narrative of Yunus’s mission, abandonment, swallowing by the fish, repentance, and release.
  • 21:87–88: Brief summary of the event.
  • 10:98: Mentions Yunus as “Dhu l‑Nun” (“The One of the Fish”) Wikipedia.

Theological Significance

The story is a lesson in patience, repentance, and Allah’s mercy. The whale is described as a divine instrument, swallowed by Allah’s command, to test Yunus’s faith and bring him to a state of sincere reflection www.qurangallery.app. The famous supplication Yunus made in the whale’s belly — “La ilaha illa Anta, subhanaka, inni kuntu minaz‑zalimeen” (“There is no deity except You; exalted are You. Indeed, I have been one of the wrongdoers”) — is a powerful example of turning to Allah in humility Iqra Online+1.

In summary: The Qur’an does indeed contain the story of Jonah (Yunus) and the whale, telling it in detail in Surah As‑Saffat and summarizing it in other chapters, emphasizing themes of repentance, divine mercy, and the power of sincere prayer.

Nineveh: The Great Cultural Center That Became the “City of Sin” – World History Encyclopedia  This is a great source of information, I suggest you check it out.

God had compassion on the people and even the animals of Nineveh. That should tell you just who God is and how far his love can reach.
There is a reason why it had to specifically be three days and three nights.  We are beginning to get deeper revelation on why.

Why is it important to Christians to stand up for the truth of the Book of Jonah?  We are called to be God’s witnesses.  This world hates God.  We care about what happens to non-believers.  We witness to them out of compassion.  We understand that they are deceived, they are under the influence of dark forces.  We were once there ourselves.  It is not until you get free that you understand what you used to be.  God knows every single person, and everything that brought them to where they are today.  He calls us to recognize that the sinners are the ones he wants to save.  As children of God, we are called to share the good news with those who are lost in the hope that they might be saved.  Our place is already secure.  We are not trying to prove anything, or gain anything for ourselves.  Jonah is not a fairy tale, a work of fiction, a joke, a mistake, it is a very vital truth.  It is a very important SIGN.

Jonah thought he could run from God.  So many people are running even today.  I knew someone once, who was very dear to me… He was running from God.  Eventually, he took his own life. Very sad.
There is NEVER any reason to run or hide from GOD.  First of all, it is futile, He sees and KNOWS everything.  He is always present, right there with you.  He hears every word you speak even before you speak it, while it is still just a thought in your mind.  More important though, you have no need to run from God because He loves you.  He is the best friend you will ever have.  He knows better than anyone ever could or ever will, because he made you.  His word says He will give you the desires of your heart.  That is a two- fold promise…He puts them there, and He is the only one who can fulfill them.
I pray that you are hearing him speaking to your heart right now.  He has so much He wants to do in your life.  I promise you, nothing you could dream or imagine could ever be as amazing as the plans He has for you.
His love is available for anyone who chooses Him.  No matter what you believe about Him or yourself… NOTHING can keep you from HIM, but you.  All you need to do is choose HIM.  He has already chosen you. All your debts are paid, He paid them on the cross.
BUT WHY THREE DAYS?  For both Jonah and Jesus.

Nothing Is Beyond You

AMY GRANT

Where could I go, where could I run
Even if I found the strength to fly
And if I rose on the wings of the dawn
And crashed through the corner of the sky If I sailed past the edge of the sea
Even if I made my bed in Hell
Still there You would find me ‘Cause nothing is beyond You
You stand beyond the reach
Of our vain imaginations
Our misguided piety The heavens stretch to hold You
And deep cries out to deep
Singing that nothing is beyond You
Nothing is beyond YouTime cannot contain You
You fill eternity
Sin can never stain You
Death has lost its stingAnd I cannot explain the way You came to love me
Except to say that nothing is beyond You
Nothing is beyond You If I should shrink back from the light
So I can sink into the dark
If I take cover and I close my eyes
Even then You would see my heart And You’d cut through all my pain and rage
The darkness is not dark to You
And night’s as bright as day Nothing is beyond You
You stand beyond the reach
Of our vain imaginations
Our misguided piety The heavens stretch to hold You
And deep cries out to deep
Singing that nothing is beyond You
Nothing is beyond YouAnd time cannot contain You
You fill eternity

I have been pondering the timeframe of 3 days and 3 nights all this week.  I have not gotten confirmation from God, so this is just something that came to my mind.  Why three days?   From the above video, we can see that it is related to resurrection of the righteous in Christ.  I started to think about the Tribulation which is divided into two parts of 3 years.  I have heard it taught that the first three years are for those who missed the rapture and will be killed for confessing Christ in the period of the Anti-Christ’s Kingdom.   The second half is for the JEWS.  Those Jews who represent the Jews who did not recognize Messiah when He came.  They were kept blind for our sake, they suffered for centuries, and now in the End, God is returning to them and fulfilling all the promises he made.  They will be protected as the Wrath of God is poured out on the Earth.   So consider this, the first part of the Tribulation, 3 years, is for those who had not chosen Him in the time of Grace.  Now, through the trial by fire, having died for HIM they are RESURRECTED. and the second half, the JEWS representing all Jews who had not recognized Him the first time, NOW are RESURRECTED.   THUSLY, All who were ever intended to be SAVED are SAVED.  It is God’s desire that no one should be lost.  His desire is that everyone would come to a saving knowledge of who He is and CHOOSE to trust HIM.

We are so close to the end now.  The door to mercy could close any day.  Please don’t miss Heaven!
