Athapaskan Religious Traditions: An Overview

ATHAPASKAN RELIGIOUS TRADITIONS: AN OVERVIEW

The Athapaskan-speaking (alternative spellings include Athabascan, Athabaskan, and Athapascan) nations of Alaska, Canada, the Pacific Northwest, and the American Southwest can be sorted into three broad cultural areas: the Northern Athapaskans, the Southern Athapaskans of the American Southwest, and the Athapaskans of the Pacific Northwest. Religious traditions in each of these areas vary markedly from each other. In general, the Northern Athapaskan religious traditions follow culturally scripted theories of ever-watchful spirit forces whose primary relationship with human beings centers on hunting and other subsistence issues. By contrast, the Southern Athapaskan religious traditions of the American Southwest focus on patterns reinforcing social harmony. The Athapaskan religious traditions of the Pacific Northwest fall into two general categories: subsistence-based traditions poised in complex social structures, and millenarian traditions that followed the arrival of European immigrants. Sacred stories, concepts of the numinous, and cultural practices, ritual activities, and concepts of leadership align themselves within these cultural areas.

Northern Athapaskan Religious Traditions

Northern Athapaskan nations are divided by the Canadian–United States border. Eleven of the twenty-nine Northern Athapaskan nations extend across the interior rivers of Alaska, while the rest occupy much of Canada’s subarctic interior and western regions. Numerous sacred stories fall into cultural patterns in roughly three large geographic zones: (1) those nearest the northwest-coast cultural region, who include the Dena’ina, Ahtna, Tahltan, and Tagish; (2) those of the interior Alaskan Tanana and Yukon riverways (Gwich’in, Han, Koyukon, Holikachuk, Deg Hit’an, Tanana, Tanacross, and Upper Tanana); and (3) northern Canadian Athapaskan nations, including the Dogrib, Hare, Sekani, and Kaska.

Animism is a more modern term for Indigenous communities and nature worshippers.The animist hunter is thus aware of himself as a human hunter, but, through mimicry, is able to assume the viewpoint, senses, and sensibilities of his prey, to be one with it.[42] Shamanism, in this view, is an everyday attempt to influence spirits of ancestors and animals, by mirroring their behaviors, as the hunter does its prey. They are the original inhabitants of the south central Alaska region ranging from Seldovia in the south to Chickaloon in the northeast, Talkeetna in the north, Lime Village in the northwest and Pedro Bay in the southwest. The Denaʼina homeland (Denaʼina Ełnena) is more than 41,000 sq mi (110,000 km2) in area.[2] They arrived in the south-central Alaska sometime between 1,000 and 1,500 years ago. They were the only Alaskan Athabaskan group to live on the coast. The Denaʼina have a hunter-gatherer culture and a matrilineal system. The Iditarod Trail‘s antecedents were the native trails of the Denaʼina and Deg Hitʼan Athabaskan Native Alaskans and the Inupiaq Inuit.[3] Their neighbors are other Athabaskan peoples and Yupik peoples: Deg Hitʼan (northwest), Upper Kuskokwim (central north), Koyukon (northeast), Lower Tanana (a little part of northeast), Ahtna (east), Pacific Yupik (Ułchena/Ultsehaga, ‘slaves‘; Chugach Sugpiaq, south-southeast from Kenai Peninsula to Prince William Sound, and Koniag Alutiiq, south on Kodiak Archipelago and the Alaska Peninsula), and Central Yupik (Dudna, ‘down-river people’, west and southwest).[4] Name The name “Dena’ina” comes from two parts: dena meaning “person” and ina, the human plural marker in Dena’ina language means “the people”, and is related to the autonym for the Southern Athabaskan Navajo people “Diné.” The Denaʼina name for Cook Inlet is Tikahtnu meaning “Big Water River”, “Ocean River” or Nuti meaning “Saltwater.” I submit that this is the source of  the name DENALI.  And therefore the name Denali does not mean The Great One.  It means of ”the PEOPLE’ most likely.  Though “the People” probably refer to the mountain as “The GREAT ONE” for the spirit that resides there.   Culture The Denaʼina are the only Northern Athabascan group to live near saltwater which allowed them to have the most sedentary lifestyle of all Northern Athabascans. The Denaʼina were organized in regional bands or Ht’ana (“people of [a place or area]”), which were composed of local bands. The regional bands had several villages or qayeh, each containing multi-family dwellings called Nichił. Each Nichił was led by a qeshqa (“rich man” or “leader”) who Russian and American traders and religious referred to as “Chiefs.” Men and women in villages belong to their mother’s clan. The clans were grouped into two sides or “moieties.” Villagers could only marry outside of their own clan and moiety, maintaining diversity in the gene pool and strength in the village lineage.[5] Archaeological work suggests that the Dena’ina have occupied the Upper and Outer Cook Inlet areas for the last 1,000 years, migrating from the Mulchatna and Stony River areas, where they had lived for thousands of years prior.[6]

The Athapaskans nearest the northwest-coast cultural region tell stories closely reflecting their historical links with the coastal Tlingit and Haida, nations with whom they have long established family and trading connections. Raven is a key element in these stories, always serving in its capacity as trickster and harbinger of change. Many of the key animal species depicted in stories of this region, such as Wolf, Whale, Seagull, and Eagle, reflect kinship group names or euphemisms for trading partners from the northwest coast. The development of shamanic power serves as a key component of oral narratives, underlying all Northern Athapaskan religious traditions.

Among the interior Athapaskans, the most important of these stories includes a pantheon of narratives about a mythical traveler, sometimes accompanied by his younger brother. Through feats of unexplained powers or humorous accidents the traveler populates the world with animals and plants. Significant species, such as ducks, mink, foxes, and wolves, are featured in their own narratives, while less important species take supportive roles. Here, too, Raven serves as the catalytic trickster figure whose actions often reverse or galvanize new lifeways among the creatures introduced by the traveler. Another important narrative from the Alaskan interior is commonly called “The Blind Man and the Loon,” a sacred story with links to Inupiat stories in the north and Algonkian stories in the south. These myths, always an expression of the tellers’ subsistence needs and the precarious impact of weather and environmental catastrophes, enclose humanity in a framework of spirits ever weighing human judgment, moral behavior, and mental attitudes.

Canadian Athapaskan sacred stories also feature a mythological heroic man, but rather than moving from area to area in a methodical way to populate the natural environment, the Canadian Dené hero interacts with his wife in constant tension with enemies from other areas. Translated into English as “The Man without Fire,” stories about the northern Canadian Athapaskan hero narrate exploits about saving his wife from kidnapping and avenging his brother’s murder.

Northern Athapaskans situate their concepts of the supernatural, humanity, and related worldviews in sacred stories. Where human populations are small and widely separated, the spiritual world dominates all activity, and ethical decisions emerge from good rapport with the natural world rather than human relations. Scarcity of food predicates the importance of sharing everything. Throughout the Alaskan Athapaskan community, clan-based feasts (usually called potlatches) serve as the primary institution for marking life-cycle events and redistribution of goods. The needs of the group submerge individual aspirations in an ethos of survival. Likewise, Northern Athapaskan individuals who manage to display appropriate self-sacrifice, personal strength, and devotion to the group emerge as great leaders. While a few women have filled such roles, Northern Athapaskan cultures generally allow primacy to men in leadership and authority.

Since the arrival of Euro-Americans, Christianity has replaced most Athapaskan religious traditions with the exception of the potlatch. Some features of the potlatch have been enhanced by American and Canadian trade goods, such as woolen blankets, rifles, and bolts of cotton cloth, each of which play an important role in the festivities, particularly as gifts. While the Anglican and Catholic faiths now predominate in Canada, Alaska’s Christian sects follow the pattern established in 1885 by Sheldon Jackson, who asked twelve denominations to preside over loosely defined geographic areas in Alaska as missionaries, and also to provide education, medical aid, and orphanages.

Southern Athapaskans of the American Southwest

Two Athapaskan peoples, the Diné and the Apache, prevail in the American Southwest in terms of population and land holdings. They are unique among Athapaskans because of their agricultural subsistence base (primarily corn) and herding. The Diné, or Navajo, with the largest Native American population in the United States (298,197 in the 2001 census) and one of the largest North American territories (over 27,000 square miles in the states of Utah, Colorado, Arizona, and New Mexico) also predominate in terms of the amount of scholarly research into their religious traditions.

Navajo traditions

Diné bahane,’ popularly known as the Navajo creation story, forms the paradigmatic core of all Diné religious, philosophical, medical, and artistic traditions. Diné bahane’ narrates four emergences of human beings into new worlds, each replete with its own benefits and sources of trouble. The fourth and present world, like the three previous worlds, revolves around dualistic relations between male and female, harmony and chaos, and sky and earth. Changing Woman, the most important of the Diné pantheon of deities, represents the renewal of life as the core of the earth and its seasons. Other Diné deities include First Man, First Woman, and Monster Slayer, all of whom are described and explained in Diné bahane’.

Gender relations dominate the narrative themes in Diné bahane’, along with discussion of linguistic styles, artistic styles, and daily work activities, all emphasizing the importance of social roles in Diné society, in contrast to the dominance of subsistence values in the Northern Athapaskan regions. Diné environmental conditions, while harsh, nonetheless have provided reliable food and shelter over the centuries, allowing the Diné to focus on their relations to each other as well as to the land. Diné bahane’ provides a metaphoric explanation for the importance of the four mountains held sacred by the Diné: Blanca Peak in Colorado, Mount Taylor in New Mexico, San Francisco Peaks in Arizona, and Hesperus Peak in Colorado. According to sacred narrative, the Diné are never to leave the precincts of these four sacred mountains.

The hogan, or dwelling, reveals the cosmological significance of the four sacred mountains by its configuration and spatial orientation. Each part of the hogan represents structures of the universe, with the floor corresponding to the earth as well as to female power, and the round roof reflecting the sky and male power. Many religious ceremonies take place in the hogan.

The Diné make use of many ritual ceremonies, of which the blessingway is the most important and performed most frequently. A two-day ceremony, the blessingway brings peace, beauty, and protection so one may achieve a long and harmonious life. During a blessingway, Diné bahane’ is recited in its entirety.

Although balanced gender relations form a core religious and social value in Diné life, from the smallest elements of daily hegemony to the largest, men dominate in the household, as ritual leaders, and in their communities, as well as in national affairs.

Apache traditions

Apachean religious traditions are in some ways similar to those of the Diné, particularly in terms of the central deity, White Clay Woman, also known as Changing Woman, or Ἰsánáklésh in the Mescalero language. Like the Diné’s Changing Woman, Ἰsánáklésh is considered to be the earth and all of its seasons and changes, as well as representing female power. Her counterpart, Usen, also called Life Giver, represents male power and appropriate leadership. The Apachean peoples of the American Southwest include the Jicarilla, Chiricahua, White Mountain, San Carlos, Mescalero, and Kiowa-Apache, many still living on reservations across the Southwest.

The women’s puberty rite continues to be the most important Apache religious ceremony. Since precolonial times Apache people have celebrated a woman’s first menses through what is now a four-day event in which the young woman is sponsored by a prominent religious leader (usually female) and an equally prestigious male singer, who are expected to instruct her in the sacred arts of becoming an adult Apache woman. The ceremonial activities include long hours of dancing, running at dawn toward Ἰsánáklésh, and finally a blessing by all of her family and kin with the use of sacred cattail pollen.

Colonial history has left the Apaches with little reservation land, but fierce reputations as warriors. Geronimo and Lozen stand out in Apache history as paradigms of the sacred power of Usen. Lozen, a late-nineteenth-century Apache woman who fought with her brother and his warriors against the U.S. government, earned a reputation for having the power to locate the enemy and possessed the male powers of Usen rather than the female powers of Ἰsánáklésh. Unlike most Apache women, Lozen took a prominent position in Apache leadership because of her legendary visionary and prophetic abilities. After Geronimo’s defeat and the Apaches’ internment on reservations, Apache religious and leadership styles changed to suit American demands for conversion to Christianity (although some follow Apache religious traditions even today) and secular elections.

Athapaskans of the Pacific Northwest

The Athapaskans of the Pacific Northwest area, unlike other Athapaskan peoples, live near rugged coastal areas in Oregon and northern California. These Athapaskan nations include the Tolowa, Hupa, Mattole, Nongatl, Sinkyone, Lassik, Wailaki, and Kato. These Athapaskan nations competed for territory with Algonkian and Hokan peoples in precolonial times. Of these, the Hupa are the largest group, numbering around two thousand in the twentieth century. Their traditional subsistence resources have been salmon, acorns, and trade. Like most of the nations of this area, Athapaskan and otherwise, the aboriginal societies were hierarchical and wealthy enough to have community leaders whose primary occupations entailed conducting ritual procedures and redistributing goods.

Sacred stories and songs, although spoken in their own languages, blended thematically with those of neighboring nations. In addition to ceremonies related directly to subsistence efforts, such as the Acorn Feast and the ceremonies to honor the first salmon of the spring salmon run, some of the Pacific Northwest Athapaskan ceremonials, such as the Jump Dance, initiate young men into what Alfred Kroeber (1907) referred to as secret societies, groups which inaugurated them into the socioeconomic and political system. (Some of the nations are now bringing back female initiation ceremonies as well.) Other ceremonials centered on protection from earthquakes and mud slides, common environmental disasters in this area.

Postcolonial religious traditions of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries include the Shaker religion, originated in 1882 by Joe Slocum and his wife, Mary, of Puget Sound after Mr. Slocum recovered from a near-death experience. The Shaker religion came to northern California in 1926. Termed a revitalization movement or millenarian religion, the Slocums’ revelations encouraged Native peoples throughout the northwest Pacific coast to rediscover the individual rapport with spirit forces found in earlier traditions, in a mode much like the Prophet Dance of Washington and the Plateau area.

The Shaker religion incorporates a mixture of precolonial Native American shamanic traditions with Christian practices. By contrast, another revitalization tradition in the Pacific Northwest area, labeled the World Renewal System by Kroeber (1949), emphasizes a return to the environmental rites of northern California’s precolonial era. The Hupa version includes six traditional rites: the Acorn Feast, First Salmon Ceremony, Fish Dam Ceremony, First Eel Ceremony, the Jump Dance, and the Deerskin Dance.

Early studies on Athapaskan religious traditions began in the American Southwest in the late nineteenth century, and have continued to the present era with increasing involvement by Athapaskan scholars. Most significant among these are Gladys Reichard’s work on Navajo religion, Inés Talamantez’s research on Apache female initiations and religious traditions, Émile Petitot’s transcriptions and translations of Canadian Dené oral narratives, Cornelius Osgood’s contributions on Ingalik (now referred to as Deg Hit’an) cosmology, Jules Jetté’s transcriptions of Koyukon religious traditions, Kroeber’s enthographies of the California Indians, and Richard Keeling’s ethnomusicological work with the Hupa.

Northern America

Indigenous Canadians and Native Americans

The 1913 Handbook of Indians of Canada (reprinting 1907 material from the Bureau of American Ethnology) ascribed former cannibal practices to dozens of North American Indigenous groups.^[41] The forms of cannibalism described included both resorting to human flesh during famines and ritual cannibalism, the latter often consisting of eating just a small portion of an enemy warrior. From another source, according to Hans Egede, when the Inuit killed a woman accused of witchcraft, they ate a portion of her heart.^[42]

Human bones dated to the 12th century found at around 40 sites throughout the American Southwest possess clear markings of being butchered and cooked. The defleshing and dismemberment of some bodies are the same as that of animals used for food. The episodes were undertaken at Anasazi sites and may have been caused by a drought. At one settlement, human feces have been found containing the proteins of human flesh, conclusively showing the occurrence of cannibalism.^[45][46]

WHETHER IT TAKES PLACE for survival after an airplane crash in some desolate region, as a depraved act by a mad murderer, or in a ritualized form among primitive cultures, cannibalism is a repulsive but fascinating subject. It evokes curiosity and perhaps a nightmarish fear since it is connected with headhunting, torture, human sacrifice, and brutality. Indeed, in some of its forms, cannibalism might be seen as an ultimate act of savagery by human beings against their own kind. From the very beginning of European overseas expansion, explorers, conquerors, and missionaries wrote extensively about contacts with cannibal races or reported their existence beyond the known frontiers. The Caribs of the West Indies, the Tupinamba of Brazil, and the Aztecs of Mexico became the best known anthropophagists, Indeed, the Caribs discovered by Columbus gave us the word ‘cannibal.’ …
The North Pacific promised to be a treasure chest in the economic and strategic areas, its coastal populations appeared to be as wild and intriguing as any race could be. To begin with, the Indians lived in a geographic setting that seemed to enhance their ferocity and warlike character. The fog-shrouded coastline, craggy islands and headlands, and deep inlets obscured mysteries and prevented the Europeans from making observations that might answer their questions. The Indians, obviously great mariners, traders, builders, and artists, offered their visitors little more than a glimpse of their complex society. Explorers and fur traders could describe arms, utensils, dress, and outward appearance, but the Indian languages were difficult and often invitations to visit villages were rejected because of perceived dangers. When communications did improve, the Indians tended to verify the first impressions of Europeans that they were a bloodthirsty, ferocious, and cruel people – anxious to exterminate their traditional enemies and to dominate the new commerce in metals, textiles, and other highly desirable products. Few observers stopped to consider that by blackening the reputations of their neighbours and bragging about their own savage prowess, Indians of one band or tribe were conducting a form of diplomacy and seeking a competitive advantage in the new trade. Even without cannibalism, the Northwest Coast Indians offered European writers plentiful material. Their transient lifestyle amidst apparent plenty allowed by fish,whales, land-based game, and other food sources evoked comparisons and contrasts with other societies. At the same time, however, many Europeans found the Indians to be out of balance with nature which seemed so bountiful to them. Their ferocity became even more compelling when set alongside their wild appearance daubed in ochre, goose down, and rancid whale oil. Fur trader William Sturgis said the men looked like JohnMilton’s description of death: ‘”fierce asten Furies, horrible ashell.” Tho it seems hard to charge them with looking like Death, for literally speaking they looked more like the Devil? Few writers passed up the opportunity to express disgust about the disfiguring labret worn by the women of the Queen Charlotte Islands and to the North of Bucareli Bay. In 2799 trader Richard Cleveland condemned the Norfolk Sound Tlingits for looking like escapees from the dominions of Satan.  He described the women as being of ‘frightful appearance’ and went on to say: ‘It is difficult… for the imagination to conceive of more disgusting and filthy beings than these patrician dames? Descriptions of Indian villages repeated themes of filthiness, indolence, and laziness. Writing about the Nootka village of Yucuat (FriendlyCove) in 1786, Alexander Walker exclaimed: ‘… words cannot  give a proper idea of the People’s nastiness. They eat like swine out of dirty troughs, and devour filth and food almost indiscriminately. ‘ During the same expedition, James Strange reported from Yucuat: ‘Words can scarcely convey to the mind of the reader,  an adequate Idea of the Beastly filth in which the Natives of this part of the World pass their lives; I declare that before I was an Eye Witness to it, I had  avery imperfect conception of the extent of it. It was impossible to move a single step,without being up to the ankles in Mud, Fish, Guts and Maggots, and this incovenience was felt alike within and without doors? Great Spirit

The Great Spirit is an omnipresent supreme life force, generally conceptualized as a supreme being or god, in the traditional religious beliefs of many, but not all, Indigenous cultures in Canada and the United States. Interpretations of it vary between cultures.

In the Lakota tradition, the Great Spirit is known as Wakan Tanka.^[1][2] According to Lakota activist Russell Means, a more semantically accurate translation of Wakan Tanka is the Great Mystery.^[3] Often, Lakota language prayers begin with the phrase “Tunkasila”, which translates to “grandfather, Great Spirit.”^[4] In the Haudenosaunee tradition, the Great Spirit is known as “the Creator”. Haudenosaunee men’s lacrosse team captain Lyle Thompson characterized it as “the Creator that lives in all of us. It’s in the sun. It’s in the moon. It’s in the stars and the water. It’s in the earth.”^[5] In the Algonquian tradition, the Great Spirit is known as Gitche Manitou.^[6]

Due to perceived similarities between the Great Spirit and the Christian deity, European colonial missionaries drew comparison between the two deities as a Christianization conversion technique.^[7]

The Great Spirit has at times been conceptualized as an “anthropomorphic celestial deity,”^[8] a god of creation, history and eternity,^[9] who also takes a personal interest in world affairs and might regularly intervene in the lives of human beings.^[8]

Numerous individuals are held to have been “speakers” for the Great Spirit; persons believed to serve as an earthly mediator responsible for facilitating communication between humans and the supernatural more generally. Such a speaker is generally considered to have an obligation to preserve the spiritual traditions of their respective lineage.^[9] The Great Spirit is looked to by spiritual leaders for guidance by individuals as well as communities at large.^[10]

While belief in an entity or entities known as the Great Spirit exists across numerous indigenous American peoples, individual tribes often demonstrate varying degrees of cultural divergence. As such, a variety of stories, parables, fables, and messages exhibiting different, sometimes contradictory themes and plot elements have been attributed to the same figure by otherwise disparate cultures.^{[citation needed]}

Wakan Tanka (Wakȟáŋ Tȟáŋka) can be interpreted as the power or the sacredness that resides in everything, resembling some animistic and pantheistic beliefs. This term describes every creature and object as wakan (“holy”) or having aspects that are wakan;^[11] tanka corresponds to “great” or “large”.^[12]

Prior to the Christianization of indigenous Americans by European settlers and missionaries, the Lakota used Wakan Tanka to refer to an organization or group of sacred entities whose ways were considered mysterious and beyond human understanding. It was the elaboration on these beliefs that prompted scholarly debate suggesting that the term “Great Mystery” could be a more accurate translation of such a concept than “Great Spirit”.^[13] Activist Russell Means also promoted the translation “Great Mystery” and the view that Lakota spirituality is not originally monotheistic.^[11]

Chief Luther Standing Bear (1868–1939) of the Lakota Nation put it thus:

From Wakan Tanka, the Great Spirit, there came a great unifying life force that flowed in and through all things – the flowers of the plains, blowing winds, rocks, trees, birds, animals – and was the same force that had been breathed into the first man. Thus all things were kindred, and were brought together by the same Great Mystery.^[14]

Manitou, akin to the Haudenosaunee concept of orenda, is perceived as the spiritual and fundamental life force by Algonquian peoples. It is believed by practitioners to be omnipresent; manifesting in all things, including organisms, the environment, and events both human-induced and otherwise.^[15] Manifestations of Manitou are also believed to be dualistic, and such contrasting instances are known as aashaa monetoo (“good spirit”) and otshee monetoo (“bad spirit”) respectively.^{[clarification needed]} According to legend, when the world was created, the Great Spirit, Aasha Monetoo, gave the land to the indigenous peoples, the Shawnee in particular.^[16]

The Spirit Guardian: Auriel of the Aurora

To protect their creation, the gods chose Auriel, the Spirit of the Aurora—a majestic guardian born from the sky’s shimmering lights. Her eyes, glowing green and blue orbs, held fierce yet tender power. With graceful flow, she danced among the auroras, her essence in every gentle breeze. Her laughter warmed the coldest heart, and her touch could revive the weary. Auriel wrapped Denali in celestial light and color. Her presence was felt in the snowflakes that gently touched the mountain, her voice a distant echo in the rugged crevices.

Isn’t that fascinating.  With all the demonstrations of Aurora Lights we have been subjected to over the past decade.  Now that they have learned how to create and manipulate AURORAs they want everyone to believe it has always been thus.  I am 72 years old and I can promise you that for thousands of years the only way you could see the Aurora Borealis was to travel to the far north where they have ALWAYS been situated.  CLOSE TO THE POLES.    The NEW AURORAS are all manmade.  They have a lot to do with all the stuff they have been putting into our Atmosphere and our Ionosphere.  And everyone is being mind-controlled into believing lies.

The Epic Struggle: Trials of Denali

Auroras have amazed people around the world for millennia with their mesmerizing light dance across the night sky.

If you’ve ever been fortunate enough to witness the northern lights or southern lights in person, it likely won’t surprise you that they have inspired countless myths and legends around the world.   That is the first time I have seen that phrase “Southern Lights”.  Really?

This phenomenon is caused by the interaction between solar particles and our planet’s atmosphere. The remarkable spectacle occurs near Earth‘s poles and manifests as a stunningly colorful display, almost as if the sky were ablaze with light.

Scientists are still studying auroras today, and likewise, our ancient ancestors tried to make sense of the phenomenon themselves, developing their own, far more whimsical explanations steeped in wonder, fear and awe.

Here we take a closer look at the rich mythology of auroras, from ancestral spirits to indicators of impending doom, and also set out to debunk some common misconceptions.

A gift from the gods

Many cultures attribute auroras to divine beings. While some believed them to be the workings of the gods, others thought they were a pathway to the afterlife.

Many North American tribes also have their own explanations for the aurora. According to the travel website the Aurora Zone, the Cree Indians believe the northern lights are the spirits of the departed trying to communicate with loved ones still on Earth. The Algonquins’ belief is that the northern lights are from a fire built by their creator Nanahbozho to remind them that he is watching over them. The people of remote Nunavik Island told tales that describe the aurora as walrus spirits playing ball with a human skull.

A particular poetic aurora myth stems from Finland, where it was believed that the light show was created by the fabled fire fox sprinting across the snow so quickly that it caused sparks to fly up and ignite the sky. The Finnish word for the northern lights “revontulet” translates as “fire fox,” according to the Aurora Zone.

Symbol of hope and renewal

The term aurora borealis is derived from the Greek language where aurora means “sunrise,” and boreas means “winds,” according to the travel site Arctic Kingdom. In Greek mythology, the character Aurora was the sister of the sun and moon gods and she would fly across the sky in a colorful chariot to signal the start of a new day. Similarly, the Romans believed that Aurora was the goddess of dawn. It is intriguing to note that both cultures associated the aurora with the beginning of a new day, even though the infamous light show is typically visible in the late evening.

For Swedish fishermen, an aurora sighting was a good omen as they believed the lights were the reflections of giant schools of herring swimming nearby, according to the travel site, Hurtigruten. For them, the northern lights were not something to fear but instead were celebrated as they promised good fortune and a generous catch.

Similarly in Iceland, auroras were welcomed, but for a rather different reason. Here, the northern lights were once thought to help relieve the pain of childbirth. But the expectant mother must avert her gaze because if she looked at the lights her child would be born cross-eyed, so the tale goes.

A bad omen

Not all cultures celebrate the northern and southern lights. For many, it’s a bad omen, one that could indicate impending doom or even carry you off into the sky.

On rare occasions, usually, during heightened solar activity, the northern lights can be seen as far south as central and southern Europe. These auroras are usually red in color and were once considered to be a sign of bloodshed. There are tales dating back to the Franco-Prussian War, the American Civil War, the French Revolution, and the Greater Wrath in Finland where magnificent red auroras were thought to be reflections of battlefields covered in blood, according to the Finland travel and tourism site.

For the indigenous Finno-Ugric people of northern Scandinavia known as the Sámi, auroras are considered to be the souls of the dead and are both feared and respected in equal measure, according to Hurtigruten. It is believed that if you catch the attention of the aurora, it could reach down and carry you off into the sky. As such the Sámi try and keep a low profile when the aurora borealis is present. That means no waving, whistling, or singing, and even to this day, many Sámi stay indoors when the lights are overhead, just to be on the safe side.

Down under, the aurora australis, or the southern lights, are an important part of Aboriginal astronomical traditions and often associated with fire, death, blood and omens — much like many Native American cultures. Aboriginal communities commonly see auroras as fires in the cosmos, according to the educational site Australian Indigenous Astronomy.

The Gunditjmara community in western Victoria refers to them as puae buae meaning “ashes,” while the Gunai people of eastern Victoria consider them to be bushfires in the spirit world and an indication of impending disaster. The Dieri and Ngarrindjeri communities of South Australia view auroras as fires generated by sky spirits. In southwestern Queensland, the phenomenon is regarded as “feast fires” of the Oola Pikka — spirits that communicate with Elders through the aurora.

Common misconceptions — debunked

We asked Chad Blakley, founder of the aurora travel tour company Lights over Lapland, to debunk some common misconceptions about auroras.

It has to be cold to see auroras

This is a common misconception that we hear all the time. The truth of the matter is that the northern lights are happening 365 days a year, 24 hours a day in the aurora zone — that is the location around the North and South Pole where the aurora is nearly always present. The reason that most people think that it needs to be cold to see the auroras likely comes from the fact that the northern lights are usually seen at the poles, where it is usually cold. That said, some of the most powerful auroras of the season usually occur around the spring and autumn equinox, which are actually the two warmest times of the entire aurora season.  How can they have a season if they are happening 365 and 24/7??

Auroras only happen in the middle of winter

This is another common misconception. The northern lights are present 365 days per year, 24 hours a day. That being said, it must be dark in order to see the northern lights. Since the auroras occur primarily in the polar regions, most photos and videos of the northern lights are captured in cold, winter-like conditions, which spreads this misconception.

You can’t see the aurora during a full moon

This is another classic example of misinformation that has no basis in fact. The bottom line is this: you can absolutely see the northern lights during all phases of the lunar cycle. The primary factor here is that a full moon can make it more difficult to see weak auroras, but I am a firm believer that a full moon, combined with powerful auroras, which are often present during solar maximum is one of the finest combinations, a sky watcher could ever ask for. The reason for this is simple: the bright moonlight illuminates the surroundings and allows you to see incredibly dimly lit landscapes with beautiful auroras dancing overhead. Our company offers lots of photographic expeditions with the sole focus of capturing pictures of the northern lights, and I can see from experience that a large percentage of professional photographers actually choose to travel with us during a full moon because it is such a photogenic and spectacular combination.

Auroras are limited to a few years each decade

This is not one that we hear quite as often as the others, but it does come up from time to time. I suspected this likely comes from the fact that the sun goes through cycles of high activity and low activity every 12 to 13 years. This process is called solar maximum and solar minimum. I have been out chasing the auroras for nearly 15 years which means I have been an aurora guide during both solar maximum and solar minimum and I can say without hesitation that we do in fact see auroras during both phases of solar output. The primary difference is that during solar maximum, we tend to see more powerful and really extravagant auroras, whereas during solar minimum these extremely powerful auroras are not quite as common — but they do still happen several times per season. The reality is that there are auroras happening 24 hours a day seven days a week 365 days a year and this has been going on as long as the Earth has been orbiting the sun. The good news is that we are currently approaching solar maximum — and as luck would have it, it’s one of the most powerful solar maximums ever recorded. This means that the next several years are an incredibly good time to travel to the Arctic and see the northern lights.   Why if they are happening everywhere?

There is one single best place to see the northern lights

This is a tricky one, as I believe that there is actually one place on Earth that stands out as the best place on the planet to see the auroras. Lots of destinations like to market themselves as the “best” place to see the northern lights but the simple truth of the matter is that there are a few conditions that must be present to have a successful aurora sighting. The first is that you almost always need to be above the Arctic Circle or below the Antarctic Circle, in the aurora zone in order to increase the odds of seeing the lights. The second factor is that you need a clear sky. The truth of the matter is that weather patterns above the Arctic Circle or below the Antarctic Circle tend to be very unstable with lots of heavy weather including snow, wind, rain, blizzards, etc. Taking both of the previous factors into consideration, there is ONE location that is above the Arctic Circle and has a very high likelihood of clear skies. This location is Abisko National Park, Sweden. The reason that Abisko stands out as the clear winner is the fact that it is right in the middle of a microclimate that leads to more clear skies than any other location in the aurora zone. This microclimate known as the “blue hole of Abisko” gives travelers from all over the planet the best possible chance of success. But you don’t have to take my word for it — you can read more about the blue hole here, and you can keep an eye on the sky with Lights Over Lapland’s array of still, HD and VR webcams which have been keeping an eye on the sky for more than a decade here.

Auroras are always green

This final topic is actually something that our guides speak about during all of our tours. This misconception comes from the fact that the vast majority of auroras that we see are in fact green. That said, while green may be the most common color of aurora, it is most certainly not the only color of aurora. I have seen green, red, blue, purple, pink, and even white auroras. When you are in the aurora zone, it’s very common to see a green aurora because this is the portion of the aurora that is visible directly overhead at this longitude and latitude. As you travel further away from the aurora zones green becomes a slightly less common color and red becomes a bit more common because the vast majority of auroras are created by the oxygen layer in the atmosphere, and all oxygen-based auroras are green on the bottom third and red on the top two thirds which means that your geographic location on earth has a large impact on what color spectrum you are able to see.

The historical observation of auroras as green is well-documented.Aristotle, in his writings, described  the aurora as “chasms” and “trenches” and noted the presence of “blood-red colors.” These descriptions datev back to around 679-655 B.C., with Assyrian astronomers inscribing an aurora event on cuneiform tablets.v The earliest known recording of the northern lights predates a previous finding by some three centuries, with a passage in Chinese history called The Bamboo Annals, or Zhushu Jinian, referencing these colors. The Chinese king and  all those in his sphere were able to see the geomagnetic phenomena in the year 977 or 957 B.C., as the Earth’s north  magnetic pole was closer to central China by some 15 degrees than at present.National Park Service

The green light that dominates the aurora is emitted by oxygen atoms relaxing from a state called “¹S” to a state called “¹D.” This transition is so slow it won’t usually happen at the kind of air pressure we see at ground level,  because the excited atom will have lost energy by bumping into another atom before it has a chance to send out a lovely green photon. But in the atmosphere’s upper reaches, where there is lower air pressure and therefore fewer oxygen molecules, they have more time before bumping into one anotherand therefore have a chance to release a photon. Science Notes and Projects

Archangel Uriel

Uriel /ˈʊəriəl/, Auriel (Hebrew: אוּרִיאֵל ʾŪrīʾēl, “El/God is my Flame”;^[5] Greek: Οὐριήλ Oúriḗl; Coptic: ⲟⲩⲣⲓⲏⲗ Ouriēl;^[6] Italian: Uriele;^[7] Geʽez and Amharic: ዑራኤል ʿUraʾēl^[8] or ዑርኤል ʿUriʾēl)^[9] or Oriel (Hebrew: אוֹרִיאֵל ʾÓrīʾēl, “El/God is my Light”) is the name of one of the archangels who is mentioned in Rabbinic tradition and in certain Christian traditions.

He is well known in the Russian Orthodox tradition and in folk Catholicism (in both of which he is considered to be one of the seven major archangels) and recognised in Anglicanism as the fourth archangel. He is also well known in European esoteric medieval literature. Uriel is also known as a master of knowledge and the archangel of wisdom.

In apocryphal, kabbalistic, and occult works, Uriel has been equated (or confused) with Urial,^[10] Nuriel, Uryan, Jeremiel, Vretil, Sariel, Suriel, Puruel, Phanuel, Azrael, and Raphael.

In the Secret Book of John, an early Gnostic work, Uriel is placed in control of the demons who help Yaldabaoth create Adam.^[11]

Uriel, Auriel or Oriel (male) / Urielle, Eurielle or Orielle (female) is also a name assimilated by the Celtic Brittanic culture, because of Urielle (7th century), sister of the Breton king Judicael, who popularised the name.

The angels mentioned in the canonical books of the Hebrew Bible (Tanakh) are generally without names. Of the Seven Archangels in the angelology of Judaism, only two of them, the archangels Michael and Gabriel, are mentioned by name in the canonised Jewish scripture.

Raphael features prominently in the Book of Tobit, which is accepted as canonical by the Catholic Church, the Eastern Orthodox Church, and the Oriental Orthodox Churches; it is part of the apocrypha in the Lutheran churches and the Anglican Communion.^[12]

Where a fourth archangel is added to the named three, to represent the four cardinal points, Uriel is generally the fourth.^[13] Uriel is listed as the fourth angel by Christian Gnostics (under the name Phanuel). However, whether the Book of Enoch refers to the same angel by two different names is debated. Uriel means “God is my flame”, whereas Phanuel means “God has turned”. Uriel is the third angel listed in the Testament of Solomon, the fourth being Sabrael.\

The Book of Enoch, which presents itself as written by Enoch, mentions Uriel in many of its component books. In chapter IX, part of “The Book of the Watchers” (2nd century BCE), only four angels are named. Those angels are Michael, Uriel, Raphael, and Gabriel (though some versions have a fifth angel: Suryal or Suriel). However, chapter XX later lists seven angels’ names and functions. Those angels are “Uriel, one of the holy angels, who is over the world and over Tartarus“, Raphael, Raguel, Michael, Saraqâêl, Gabriel, and Remiel.

The Book of Enoch

The body of literature attributed to the antediluvian patriarch Enoch represents one of the most major and complex collections of non-canonical writings from the Second Temple period. When scholars and researchers refer to the “Book of Enoch,” they are most commonly referencing the work known as 1 Enoch, or Ethiopic Enoch. This is not a single, unified book but rather a composite library—a collection of at least five distinct literary works, written by various authors over a span of several centuries and later redacted into a single volume.¹ The preservation of this collection is a historical marvel in itself; while fragments in its original Aramaic and its translated Greek form exist, the only complete version to survive antiquity is in the ancient liturgical language of Ethiopia, Ge’ez.³

The Book of the Watchers (Chapters 1–36): This is perhaps the most famous section, detailing the cosmic transgression of a group of angels known as the Watchers. The Book of Enoch, also known as 1 Enoch, is an ancient Jewish text  attributed to Enoch,  the great-grandfather of Noah.  It is part of a collection of writings known as the Pseudepigrapha, which  includes works attributed to biblical figures  but not included  in the canonical scriptures. The Book of Enoch contains several sections,  including the Book of the Watchers and the Book of Parables, and it  explores themes such as angelic rebellion, divine judgment, and  apocalyptic visions.

The Book of the Watchers tells us that Uriel, Raphael, and Gabriel were present before God to testify on behalf of humankind. They asked for divine intervention during the reign of the fallen Grigori (fallen watchers). These fallen ones took human wives and produced half-angel, half-human offspring called the nephilim. Uriel is responsible for warning Noah about the upcoming great flood.

Then said the Most High, the Holy and Great One spoke, and sent Uriel to the son of Lamech, and said to him: “<Go to Noah> and tell him in my name ‘Hide thyself!’ and reveal to him the end that is approaching: that the whole earth will be destroyed, and a deluge is about to come upon the whole earth, and will destroy all that is on it.”^[27]

After judgment has been brought upon the nephilim and the fallen ones (see The Book of Giants), including the two main leaders Samyaza and Azazel, Uriel discusses their fates:

And Uriel said to me: “Here shall stand the angels who have connected themselves with women, and their spirits assuming many different forms are defiling mankind and shall lead them astray into sacrificing to demons ‘as gods’, (here shall they stand,) till ‘the day of’ the great judgment in which they shall be judged till they are made an end of. And the women also of the angels who went astray shall become sirens.’ And I, Enoch alone, saw the vision, the ends of all things; and no man shall see as I have seen.”^[28]

In Hermetic Qabalah, Uriel’s name is commonly spelled Auriel. He is regarded as the archangel of the North, and of the element of Earth.^[34]

According to the teaching of the modern Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn, Uriel is the archangel of North and of Earth, and is thus associated with the vegetation of the Earth. In iconography, he is depicted holding stems of ripened wheat and wearing robes of citrine, russet, olive, and black.^[35]

You have to understand that Kabbalistic and Babylonian Rabbinical Jews are just a Pagan and absent of the Truth of GOD as all other Pagan Religions.  They are also therefor just as Polytheistic as any other pagans. That is until GOD opens their eyes and ears as HE Promised He will do.  Then all of them will be saved. Also, as HE PROMISED.
