Black women—like the mothers of the murdered Trayvon Martin, Michael Brown, and Eric Garner all featured in the film—are given room to grieve unimaginable losses.
Beyoncé samples Malcolm X’s “Who Taught You to Hate Yourself?” speech to convey some facts plainly: “The most disrespected person in America is the Black woman. The most unprotected person in America is the Black woman. The most neglected person in America is the Black woman.” Beyoncé has the platform, and she’s using it to demand that people respect, protect, and pay attention to Black women.
And when she embodies Oshun in Lemonade and her subsequent visual album, Black Is King, she’s saying that she will reclaim her earthly power through the supernatural and through her African roots. Assuring viewers that there is the possibility of liberation in orisha worship, of stripping away the colonized religions and beliefs that have forced the descendants of enslaved and oppressed people to fit a foreign mold. Beyoncé holds that possibility up for the camera.
The Religion
An amalgamation of West African/Nigerian Yoruba cosmology, Catholicism, and the nineteenth century French practice of spiritism, the complex Afro-Cuban religion Santería has been historically shrouded in secrecy. It’s also known as La Regla de Ocha (the rule of the ocha/orisha) or Lukumí.
It is the religion of the underdog. It’s subversive (seeking to overthrow a political regime.) It’s about survival through authenticity and adaptation. Enslaved Africans brought their stories and practices to Cuba from Nigeria. White Spanish colonizers encouraged syncretism or a merging of their beliefs with Catholicism through African ethnic fraternal organizations called cabildos. After that, Changó, the fiery, virile male god of fire, lightning, music, and war, became Santa Barbara, who often appears in Changó’s color red and is depicted with lightning bolts and a crown. Oshun became aligned with Our Lady of Charity, or Caridad del Cobre, the patron saint of Cuba.
Just as Yoruba beliefs were dragged to Cuba through the slave trade, they again were pushed out into the world during the Cuban diaspora, fueled by the 1959 Cuban Revolution. Santería’s magical branches grew strong and steadily throughout the world, but when Beyoncé dropped Lemonade, the most popular reference to this syncretic belief system since Sublime’s 1996 eponymous ska-pop song, those branches had a growth spurt.
Lemonade gave her fans something much more intimate to explore. In the religion, each of us has orisha “parents” with whom we share personal traits and affinities. They are the owners of our heads, spiritually and literally for believers. In Lemonade, Beyoncé is placing Oshun at her crown.
Orishas are flawed and complicated divinities, and their stories—which they share directly through a divination system called Ifá—include ethical advice and direction on how to move through the world.
The orishas expect us to harness and draw from their earth energy to fight for the things we believe in with our whole beings. For Beyoncé, it was her marriage and family. But in this time of climate change and political inaction and human-fueled cataclysms, the orishas invite us to see ourselves in them. As Oshun is the river, her children are drawn to water, are one with the water, and are driven to protect the water.
The BeyHive
If Oshun is the guiding light for Beyoncé, then Beyoncé is a guiding light for her fans.
Fans see themselves in Beyoncé, and that is her power. As with Swifties and Little Monsters, the BeyHive is an identity shaped by popular culture. (Side note: bees make honey, Oshun’s favorite thing to eat.)
Friends have told me that songs on Bey’s 2022 album Renaissance saved their lives. The wildly popular Renaissance tour and last year’s documentary provided fans with a church to worship their idol. In the film, we see Beyoncé’s eleven-year-old daughter join her on stage for “My Power” and “Black Parade,” two songs off Black Is King that trace the bloodlines linking the American South to Africa. In the latter, she calls out Oshun explicitly. Oshun, after all, grants us the fertility to allow for new generations to be born.
When Lemonade dropped, the internet lit up with think pieces—from Vogue, Remezcla, Ms., PBS, and Vox—praising Beyoncé for using her platform to share the orishas with the world.
Kameelah L. Martin, director of the African American Studies Program at the College of Charleston, and Kinitra D. Brooks, Chair in Literary Studies at Michigan State University, were inspired to create The Lemonade Reader, a scholarly look at the singer’s oeuvre.
“I was not a diehard Beyoncé fan when Lemonade hit,” Martin says. But once she turned it on, she couldn’t look away. Martin jumped on FaceTime with Brooks, both in their pajamas, excited to talk about what this exploration of African ancestry meant for Black women and about the yellow dress.
“I was floored that she had found this sort of depth and spiritual knowledge that was embedded in the film. . . . And I was like, Who has Beyoncé been talking to?” Martin says. “She did that for the world to see. It’s normalizing orisha worship. And exposing people who didn’t even know this was a thing. . . .
She’s paying homage to it in a way that we have not seen a pop culture icon of her stature ever do. She certainly put it on the map.”
R & B singer SZA also often posts on social media about her ties to Santería and Yemayá (who guards the oceans), including using the phrase to praise an orisha, “Maferefun Yemaya y Ochun.” On her 2023 tour stop at Madison Square Garden, ocean themes abounded and she wore a navy jersey with the word yemaya on the back.
It’s been rumored that Jennifer Lopez was crowned with Oshun; that Forest Whitaker wore white for a year, a requirement of initiates; and that singers India Arie and Summer Walker might also be involved in the religion. Beyoncé included practitioners and twin Cuban singers Lisa-Kaindé and Naomi Diaz of Ibeyi on Lemonade—Ibeyi also represents the divine, mischievous orisha twins of Oshun.
“Something is happening in the celebrity world where we’re seeing more young women in particular move in the direction of orisha worship,” Martin says. “And they’re not afraid to show it.”

Since then several fans have claimed to mutilate themselves to show respect to their ‘Queen Bey’ – and they’ve posted the pictures to prove it.

During her Tidal X: 1015 performance, pop singer Beyoncé accidentally ripped her earlobe. Beyoncé fans now rally behind the her, showing support in the weirdest of ways. Fans took to twitter to start a #BleedforBeyonce or #CutforBeyonce campaign. Apparently, the only way that can lift the singer’s spirits is watching her fans bleed.
After the show had ended, members of the Bey Hive took to Twitter to in support of the superstar and started off a crooked trend. Under the hashtags #BleedforBeyonce or #CutforBeyonce, fans tweeted about restoring her spirits by cutting themselves. One fan tweeted, “Im starting the #bleedoutforbeyonce challenge! Pass out and the superstar will notice you and revive you! #bleedforbeyonce #cutforbeyonce” and kicked off the frenzeid storm.
What might have started off as a joke, turned real graphic with people actually cutting themselves to show support for the star. “If the queen bleeds the hive must unify and leak our blood to restore her spirits. Beyhive we must #CutForBeyonce,” one user tweeted with a photo of herself bleeding. This is no joke people. The “spirits” that Beyonce Worships and embodies, are demon spirits who demand blood sacrifice. In the visual for “Hold Up”, the third track on Beyoncé’s 6th album Lemonade, the singer brings terror to a quaint town as she manically – and quite jovially – smashes cars and store windows motivated by suspicions of her cheating lover. But it’s not just intuition fueling her rampage, visually, Beyoncé is channeling something much more powerful – the Yoruba goddess Oshun.Oshun is one of many dieties, or Orishas, of the Yoruba based religions that originated in present day Nigeria and traveled with the slaves to the Americas during the slave trade. These traditions survived largely through out Latin America and the Caribbean and are still practiced in many iterations, most notably as Santeria in Cuba, Vodou in Haiti, and Candomblé in Brazil.
Oshun is the goddess of love, beauty and womanhood. She dwells in rivers and fresh water and is known for her sweetness and her benevolence. But if betrayed, she’s known to bring the fury – sound familiar?
She is often depicted wearing yellow and holding a fan and a mirror, a symbol of her femininity, but in the visual for “Hold Up”, Beyoncé trades in those accessories for a baseball bat named Hot Sauce as she ransacks the town in a flowing golden Roberto Cavalli frock.
On Facebook, Maximiliano Goiz, a practitioner of Santeria penned a viral post on Beyoncé’s tribute:
The progression of Lemonade’s narrative shows Beyoncé healing through her husband’s alleged betrayal and passing down her wisdom and self-assurance to the next generation. The film sets Beyoncé on a southern plantation in the company of some of today’s brightest young icons such as Zendaya, Amandla Stenberg and Quvenzhené Wallis. She reminisces on the lessons she’s learned from her mother and grandmother, and recites a poem about daughters (Nail Technician) by Somali-British writer Warsan Shire. Over the last month, there has been much controversy surrounding the actress, Halle Bailey, who was selected for the role of Ariel in the movie, The Little Mermaid. Much of the controversy was due to her being black, while the character has been traditionally portrayed as white. Honestly, when the news came out, I didn’t really pay it much mind. However, several days ago when I saw that Queen Latifah was going to play the character Ursula and stated, “Fortunately, I know a little magic… #teamseawitch,” the Holy Spirit nudged me to look deeper into this issue.
As kids, most of us have seen The Little Mermaid and thought it was just a cute kids movie. However, have you ever considered the origin? In other words, the concept of a marine community/kingdom that houses a mermaid, witch, etc, where did this come from? Is there any reality to this?

The article goes onto say,
“When you come here and tell Osun ‘I am looking for a baby,’ you get a baby; ‘I’m looking for a husband,’ you get a husband; ‘I am looking for money,’ you get money,” priestess Osafunke Iworo Oshun told CNN last year. “Whatever someone asks, Osun will always give the person because it’s important for the society.”
Indeed, in her second single, Hold Up, released from her album, Lemonade, she (Beyonce) appeared in the video as Osun. In that video, she wears a yellow dress opening doors with water gushing out from behind her. This, of course, is to symbolize the water spirit Osun.
What is even more daunting is an article that was written by billboard.com entitled “Beyonce Brings Wonderful Witchcraft, Healing Powers in Lemonade”. A quote from the article,
“The witch is a symbol of womanhood…The witch is a healer, a shaman, a representative of a larger god or goddess on Earth. Enter Beyonce. With her sixth album, Lemonade, she has modeled herself into a witch — of the healing variety — during a time when black women are in need of positive reinforcement, deep healing and transformation.”
The article unashamedly refers to Beyonce as a witch and explains it as something desirable (especially for black women). Clearly, Beyonce is openly revealing her involvement in the occult. Although the secular world observes this, many in the church are clueless! Indeed, it gets even more bizarre.
In September 2018, Beyonce’s drummer of seven years, Kimberly Thompson, accused Beyonce of using extreme witchcraft against her. As a result, she applied for a restraining order against the singer. To add, Beyonce’s husband Jay-Z had known occultist/witch Marina Abramovich featured in his video Picasso Baby (which looked like some kind of ritual). Furthermore, Abramovich was implicated in the John Podesta (Hillary Clinton’s Campaign Chairman in 2016) emails that were leaked describing the occult practice of “spirit cooking,” in which she invited Podesta and his brother.
As wicked and heinous as this seems, it gets more dastardly and eerie. When we return back to the movie, The Little Mermaid, and the actress that has been selected Halle Bailey, could it be that she has any association with Beyonce?
Bailey was discovered by Beyonce through a Youtube rendition in 2014 and signed Bailey to her management company, Parkwood Entertainment for one million dollars to do six albums. Indeed, the article from billboard.com states,
“The witch is also seen as malicious because of her close connection to youth. She consumes (eats/devours) younger women to remain beautiful. Here, Beyonce’s coven is of the young and visionary. Her Parkwood signees Ingrid, Chloe & Halle…”
Is it a coincidence that Beyonce worships a water spirit, practices/promotes witchcraft, husband does a video with a known witch, and then lands her protege the coveted role of a water witch/mermaid? Ironic, huh?
In saying this, there is much information that I can’t type in this blog because it would turn into a book (which I am considering writing). However, by just reading the articles that are linked below, understanding how the spirit world operates, and the reality that there is a “marine kingdom” that is a subset of Satan’s overall kingdom, it is clear that Beyonce and those who worship these water spirits understand what is going on. Essentially, The Little Mermaid is a movie created to indoctrinate the public to believe such things are merely fairy tales, while in reality these entities are accessed by witches to do evil.
Sadly, Disney has been at this for decades, that is, indoctrinating the public to embrace the occult by having a plethora of shows, movies, etc that depict witches as being good and kid-friendly. What is even more blatant is “Walt Disney’s Magic Kingdom”. What kingdom practices “magic”? The dark kingdom: Satan’s kingdom. Magic is the politically correct term for “witchcraft” or “sorcery”. What if it was labeled “Walt Disney’s Witchcraft Kingdom” or “Walt Disney’s Sorcery Kingdom”? I digress.
In closing, I know some of you may think I have lost my mind. Indeed, if I have lost my mind by merely exposing these connections, what does that say about those who are actively involved in these wicked activities? Others may have had some suspicions of what is mentioned above. Nevertheless, I would caution against listening to any music that Jay-Z or Beyonce put out.
